My old friend Francis called out of the blue, asking me how I was and how married life was.
Not long afterwards, he sent me a photo of a man and asked if I knew him. I asked, “Is he one of our mates?” He answered, “Oh, you don’t know him? I will tell you about him later. Just keep the photo.”
Several months later, Francis called me and said I should come and see his house. I asked if he had built a new house and was doing a housewarming. I lived in Tema. He lived in Accra. Yes, it wasn’t a long distance, but life and the hustle made the distance feel like a million miles away from each other. I promised I would come, and he said, “Just come when I ask you to come. I want to show you something.”

For a long time, he didn’t call again. Then, one early Saturday morning, he told me to leave everything and come and see something. My wife had travelled, and I was the one taking care of our son. I told him I couldn’t leave our boy alone, and he said, “Come with him. Is he a toddler?”
I picked an Uber and started off to his house. When he saw me, he said, “You’ve come right on time. You see the photo I sent you? The man is here.”
He pointed at the door and asked me to go and knock. “Your wife is there with him. I wanted you to see it with your own eyes.”
Suddenly, I started shaking from head to toe. I asked, “How did you know?” He answered, “The man doesn’t live here, but anytime he comes around, your wife comes around. I learnt your wife rented the house.”
I had to take a seat to see if it would stop me from shaking. I looked at the face of my son and also at the face of my friend. He asked, “Or you don’t want to know the truth?”
I told him,, “No matter what happens, don’t let my boy come out.”
I went to the door and knocked. I had to knock consistently and hard until he came out to open it. Immediately he saw me, his spirit took flight. He couldn’t say a word but rather tried to close the door again. I put my leg in the way and told him, “I want to see my wife. What are you doing inside with my wife?”
He tried to lock the door, but I put myself in the way and started pushing. He said he was going to call the police because I was invading his privacy. He pushed, and I pushed. Our voices started getting louder, so two other guys came to see what was happening. I screamed, “My wife is in there.”
Men are good people. These two guys pulled the man away, and I entered. My wife was seated with her face buried in her palms and was shaking just the way I was shaking.
“Oh, this is your new house? Is this what you’ve been doing? What did I do to deserve this?”
I was about to throw my hand when those two guys grabbed me from behind and pulled me away. May God bless them wherever they are. It would have been a murder case had it not been for them.
By the time I started looking around for the man, he had disappeared. His car was there, but his body was nowhere to be found. My friend came out, put me and my boy in his car, and drove me out of the area.
I got home and waited for my wife. I waited for the rest of the day, and she didn’t show up. I called her mother that night and asked if she was there. She asked, “Is my daughter missing?” I answered, “She travelled to cheat and hasn’t returned. I thought she was with you.”
I narrated the whole story to her, and she started crying on the phone. “You mean my daughter? Who taught her how to cheat? Where did she learn that from? She has friends? Oh my God.”
For three days, I didn’t see my wife. I went to her office three days in a row, and I was told she wasn’t there. She had asked for days off because she was sick. I called all her friends, those I knew and those I didn’t know but was referred to. They all said they didn’t know my wife’s whereabouts.
We had a shop where we imported materials and sold them. There was a lady in charge of the shop. Three days after I had not heard from my wife, I went to the shop, and the lady said my wife had come for the day’s sales and asked her to keep the keys until she came for them.
Eventually, it was her elder sister who called to tell me my wife was with her. She was hiding because she was scared of what I would do to her. I said again, “Good to know she’s alive, but she should never come home again. I swear she will regret it if she dares come.”
I would wake up at dawn and cry. I would go to work, hide in a corner, and cry for several minutes. Everyone knew there was something wrong with me, but I couldn’t tell them. I couldn’t call my own parents to tell them what was happening to me. I confided in a lady friend who told me, “If you can, forgive her, she will never attempt that again.”
“I saw her with my own eyes ooo,” I said. “This is not hearsay, and you think I should forgive her?”
She answered, “You’ve been crying. That means a lot. Call her. Get closure and see if you can rebuild. That’s the only advice I can give you.”
I couldn’t eat for several days. Everything was fine in our marriage. We talked about everything. We built together. We planned together. We started several businesses together, and we failed. Our sex life was also very good. So why?
It was that question that made me shed a lot of tears.
It took me several weeks to inform my parents. My dad was like, “And you haven’t mentioned it all this while? I knew something was wrong. I could sense it, but I didn’t know it was this intense. Come and let’s talk.”
What Caused The Breakup Between You And Your Ex?
My dad said even if I had the slightest desire to take her back, I shouldn’t listen to that desire. “You can forgive her but end the marriage, otherwise you’ll be miserable. You will spend all your life thinking about it and asking where you fell short as a man for another man to take over your wife.”
I listened to my dad. I forgave her but ended the marriage. To date, anytime I think of it, I shudder. When I see her, I shrink in fear. It’s like she’s coming to hit me with a hammer. We have a child we are taking care of. I try to focus on that and allow my fear to roam.

Bro, you cant allow yourself to bear the consequences of someone who wronged you. If your wife wrongs you, why should you be traumatised. You need to regain yourself and move on with your life. Be bold and strong at least for your child, and you deserve better. So since you have divorced her, you need to forgive her so you both can coordinate effectively to make that child a better person in future.
And enough with crying, now you need to go and hunt for a better wife.
I dont see why you should cry, over her behaviour. She needs to cry over her behaviour.
“No matter what happens, don’t let my boy come out” Thank you for saving your son from trauma.
May God heal you. What you feel when you see her shows you haven’t healed.
Take one day at a time.
