Four years ago, my husband and I completed a two-chamber hall building on a piece of land. My husband started the building before he met me. When I came into the picture, I supported him so that after marriage, we would have a place to lay our heads. We rented out the other room. One day, after work, there was an issue involving the tap in the house, so we went to speak to our tenant. He told us that my husband’s stepfather had come to him, claiming to be the landlord, so he had given him the money to fix the issue and had even been issued a new tenancy agreement.

It turned into a heated argument. When we were building the house, we knew the land belonged to my husband’s mother. His mother and stepfather were no longer married, and that is one mistake we regret to this day. My mother-in-law gave her son the authority to build on the land. During the construction of the rooms, my stepfather-in-law was around. He lives just three houses away from us. He saw us do everything, and not once did he stop us or say anything about the land.

We took the case to Rent Control to evict the tenant so we could have our room back. Rent Control invited my stepfather-in-law, and he came demanding custody of the two rooms because he claimed the land belonged to him. We have a record of the conversation in which he admitted that he saw us put up the building and made no effort to stop us.

The officer said we should allow a surveyor to come and assess the cost of putting up the two rooms so that he could pay us for the building and take over. We did that, but after the evaluation and estimation, he said he would not accept the outcome. We took the issue to court for the law to prevail. Police officers had to show up at his doorstep before he showed up in court. We were referred to the chief for the settlement of the land dispute. It was agreed that, since my stepfather-in-law claimed ownership of the land, we should give him one of the rooms as compensation for the land and keep the other room to cover the money we had spent on the supposed land.

We agreed to the arrangement for the sake of peace, especially because my mother-in-law was indisposed at the time and could not defend herself or even speak up. We were all instructed not to harass anyone again. After the ruling, we moved out based on family advice and rented out our room. However, my stepfather-in-law refused to allow our tenant access to water. We tried to get another water meter for the sake of peace, but we were told that since it was one house, we could not have two meters. For two years, our tenant had no access to water.

Aside from that, the spiritual attacks on our tenants were serious. Scorpions would appear in the room. There were weird sounds behind the tenant’s window at night, and other strange things kept happening. The first tenant got fed up and moved out. We rented the room to another person, and the same complaints started coming in. Scorpions and other strange occurrences. Sometimes, the tenant would return from work and find four live scorpions right in the centre of her room. There would also be cockroaches on her bed, not just one or two, but a whole heap of them. We do not know how they got there. She also packed out of the house.

People no longer wanted to rent the place because, whenever they did background checks, they were told about what happened there, and they would refuse to take the room.

Fast-forward to why I am here. Things have become so bad for my husband and me over these four years that we can no longer afford to pay rent.

We have lost everything we have worked for, and we believe that what is happening to us is clearly spiritual. We practically beg for food now. They have destroyed everything we had, so we decided that since we could no longer rent out the place and we had no money, we would go and live there ourselves until things got better. Then we could move out.

The first day we went there to try to clean up the place, my stepfather-in-law sent a message through his son telling us not to set foot in the house.

We called the chief who presided over the case four years ago, and he told us that we had every right to the place. However, when we tried to take a few things into the house yesterday, my stepfather-in-law refused to allow us entry.

Now, everything in Ghana is about money, and as things stand, we even went to bed last night without food.

We do not have the means to pay for the police, transportation, or the constant movement from one place to another to pursue this matter.

Things are really bad for us. I have prayed and fasted enough. I joined several prayer platforms some days ago, hoping that something would change. The man has even threatened to kill my husband spiritually if we dare him. He told us that the police do not deal with spiritual cases, so nothing would be done to him.

I have become a prayer warrior because of this issue. What haven’t I done? I am exhausted. My husband and I have lost everything, and we do not even have the means to fight for what we believe is rightfully ours. Please, what can we do? How do we get our house back and put an end to all this?
