I want to cut my best friend off because of her husband. I love her so much, but I hate her husband. When she talks about him, I tell her I don’t want to hear about him, but then I realised she’s a married woman who’s going through a lot and needs someone to talk to.

Richmond lived abroad for years and returned with nothing. I believe he was deported, but Agnes believes something different. They started dating while he was there. They dated for four years, and one day he went missing. He didn’t contact Agnes for over three months, and then boom, he was in Ghana empty-handed, telling Agnes that his belongings were being shipped by sea and would arrive later.

He didn’t even have money for food. It was Agnes who was taking care of him until he got a job, and once he got one, he quickly suggested they should get married. I told Agnes, “Be careful. This is a man who said his things were coming by sea, but they never came. You still believe him? What does he have that makes you want to settle down with him?”

She answered, “He has a good heart, and that’s everything. He’s a good man going through a rough patch. Should I let him go because of that? He’ll come good, trust me.”

I knew my best friend had already made up her mind, and I couldn’t rescue her. During the preparation for the wedding, I was very involved. Agnes spent on the wedding as if she was getting married to herself. When I talked about it, she changed her story. From then on, everything we bought, she told me it was Richmond who gave her the money to buy. I knew she was lying.

Then, after the wedding, this man tried all he could to break me and my friend apart, but Agnes kept coming to me because I’m all she has. One day, this man called me on the phone and asked if Agnes was with me, and I said, “Why would a husband ask a friend where his wife is? Between you and me, who should know where she is?”

He flared up. “People like you are the reason my wife can’t keep her head down in this marriage. Go and marry and attend to a man so you’ll be busy enough not to entertain friendship. Your friend is married. Go and marry too. Or you don’t have good character, and that’s why no man wants to marry you?”

But for the respect I had for Agnes, I would have taken this guy to the cleaners. I felt something was wrong. “Why doesn’t he know where Agnes is?” I asked myself.

Then I called her. I asked where she was, and she said she couldn’t tell me, but she was fine. I said, “You’re not fine. Richmond called me…”

Immediately I mentioned her husband’s name, she became anxious. “What did he say? Was he angry? Was he disturbed?”

“Agnes, where are you? What’s going on?”

She told me where she was. It wasn’t far from my place, so I dressed up and went to meet her there. She was wearing dark spectacles. I know my friend. She would never wear spectacles for no reason. She had told me that whenever she wore them, they made her nose uncomfortable. I asked, “Your nose is not bothering you?”

Then she looked away and started sobbing. Her husband had slapped her face and left a mark there. Agnes is very fair. Even a little irritation on her skin leaves a mark. She removed the spectacles. I asked if she had told anyone, and she said no. I asked if she would go back home again, and she asked where else she could go if not home.

“Agnes, this man will be the death of you. He has even started hitting you?”

She said it was her fault, but she didn’t think he would go that far. I kept quiet and listened to her talk. She said she knew I was probably thinking, “I warned you,” because I had warned her and she didn’t listen. I still didn’t talk.

“But don’t worry, I will be fine.”

She went back home that very day, and things got worse. She had to run back to my place because Richmond picked up a belt and asked her to go back to wherever she had come from. She spent the weekend with me. Richmond came to my house to fetch her. I met him at the gate and told him she wasn’t with me. He started screaming, telling me I should get out of his way so he could come and get his wife.

I said, “You drive a car you didn’t buy. You live in a house she paid for, but you have the audacity to touch her? Agnes won’t report you to the police, but trust me, I’ll do it. Shameful man.”

While I was confronting him, Agnes came out to meet him and was rather angry with me for exchanging words with her husband. She told me right there that I shouldn’t be saying all that to her husband because I was making it look as though she had told me everything about their private issues.

And Richmond also replied, “You see why I tell you all the time to cut people like her off? They are the reason our marriage is chaotic.”

I stood there speechless while he drove away. I told myself it was the last time I was going to involve myself in their marriage. She got home and called to tell me to apologise to her husband for what I told him because he was hurt and was taking his anger out on her.

I told her, “Agnes, go to hell and never come back into my life again. Listen to your husband and cut me off. I’m never going to apologise to that quarter man you call a husband.”

I did my best to stay away from her. I stopped picking up her calls and even blocked her, and blocked Richmond too. After a week of not hearing from her, I got worried. I unblocked her. The very day I unblocked her, she called. She apologised to me and was going on and on. I asked, “What’s going on?”

She answered, “Can I come and see you?”

She was here when I started writing this story. She said she was tired of her marriage and she feels there’s a devil sitting inside their marriage causing all those problems. I just listened. I cooked for us. We ate. We drank something. When she said she was leaving, I told her I was happy to see her and that she should give herself the chance to live long enough for me to keep seeing her every day.

If she’s wise, she’ll understand what I’m saying. If not, when the time comes, I’ll wear my black and mourn her, knowing very well that I tried to help her stay alive.
