He saved me twice—no, thrice. First from the rain, second from dying. The third is the reason I’m sharing this story.

My boyfriend broke up with me after three years of dating. He was my everything. Even when I found out he had a girlfriend studying abroad and they were planning to get married, I still begged him to keep me so he could break up with me slowly. The way he was breaking up with me was going to leave me lifeless.

He still broke up with me because, according to him, he was getting married very soon. I was a walking dead woman. Everything around me faded to black and white. After work one evening, I was standing by the roadside waiting for a car home when this nice white car stopped next to me. I thought he was lost and was going to ask for directions.

“Beautiful lady, where are you going? I can help.”

All of a sudden, there was this huge surge of anger rising within me. All I wanted to do was insult him, but instead, I chuckled and took a few steps away from him. He came closer, telling me he wasn’t a bad person and was only trying to help. I smiled mischievously and told him to move on if he was looking for a hookup girl to pick up.

He received a call, and while talking to the person, I assessed him critically. He looked innocent. Plus, the weather also wasn’t looking good. After the call, he said, “It’s alright. I was only trying to help.” I mentioned where I was going, and he told me he didn’t mind taking me to a place where it would be easier to get a car home.

A few seconds after we took off, it began raining heavily. That was the first saving. He saved me from the rain that day. He didn’t say anything. He only listened while I directed him to my gate. I said thank you, and he asked for my number. I gave it to him, knowing very well I wasn’t going to pick up his calls. He called, and I saved his number as “Lift Guy.”

I never picked up his calls again. Even when he texted, I didn’t respond. In his last text, he said, “I’m sorry if I’m bothering you, but I promise I won’t call or text again if I don’t get a response to this one.”

I didn’t respond, and true to his word, he stopped calling. I went back to my ex, trying hard to get him to even make me his side chick, but his girlfriend had already returned to the country, so he warned me not to bother him again. One night, while in bed, I planned to go and destroy their relationship. If I wouldn’t get him, then no one should.

I planned to go there while his girlfriend was around and tell her the whole story. I was going to tell her I wasn’t leaving the relationship because of her. I even texted my ex, telling him my plan. But that very night, while I slept, I felt a very sharp pain in my abdomen. A few seconds later, things escalated. I was sweating profusely from the pain. The pain was so severe I thought I was dying.

I called my ex and asked him to come over. He didn’t answer my call. He didn’t text back. It was around 1 a.m. I screamed in my room until a lady next door called to ask what the problem was. I said, “Please, I’m dying. My abdomen. It’s splitting apart.” When she came to knock on my door, I had to crawl to open it. We agreed I had to go to the hospital, but how?

The Lift Guy came to mind. I called. It didn’t ring twice before he answered.

“Please help me. I’m dying. How fast can you get here?”

He said forty-five minutes, but he was there in under thirty minutes. He didn’t ask any questions. He lifted me from the floor and carried me to the car. My neighbour sat next to me as he quickly drove me to the hospital. The next day, I had surgery for a ruptured appendix.

He didn’t leave until morning when my mom and elder brother came around. My mom asked who he was, and I couldn’t even mention his name because I didn’t know it. I said, “He’s a new friend I met not long ago.” My mom said the nurse referred to him as my husband. He laughed. He said that was what he told the nurse when they admitted me.

When he left, he didn’t call again. I called to thank him. He asked how I was doing, and I told him. The next day, I called again. When I told him when I would be discharged, he came to take me home.

That was the second time he saved me. Without him, maybe I wouldn’t have lived to tell this story.

I asked him what he wanted when he stopped that day. He said, “Should I be honest?”

I answered, “In all honesty, why did you stop?”

“I saw a beautiful woman, and I was attracted to her. I’d never done that in my life, to stop and ask to pick up a woman, but I did because I really wanted to know you.”

“So now that you know me, what next?”

“I don’t know. Time will tell.”

“You’re not looking for a girlfriend? I’m single. Anaa you’re married?”

“And my wife would allow me to pick another woman at dawn?”

Then he laughed. I told him why I had behaved the way I did that day. I shared my story and how I begged my ex to make me his side chick.

The day he came forward to tell me he wanted me to be his girlfriend, he added, “I won’t break your heart like he did. Trust me.”

I said, “I’ll only believe you the day we get married.”

A week or so later, my ex got married. When I heard it, the old me would have broken down into pieces, or maybe the old me would have carried out the plan she had before the appendix. Instead, it felt like hearing about the death of a stranger. I was unaffected. It didn’t even feel like I had dated him. That was the third saving.

Months after he got married, he called me to apologise for everything he did to me and said we could be friends. I laughed and laughed until he asked what was wrong with me. I told him I didn’t need a friend because I had everything I needed in a man from the Lift Guy.

“The Lift Guy? Who is that?”

We dated for a year and got married. He didn’t save me from all that only to leave me in the lurch. Two years after our marriage, once in a while I still call him the Lift Guy because he still lifts me from grace to grace. It doesn’t matter how love happens. If it’s true, everything works perfectly in the end.
