After a year of dating and discussions of marriage, I took her to meet my parents and told them she was the woman I wanted to marry. They were receptive, and to date, my parents call her and talk to her as someone who’s already part of the family.

Right after my introduction a year ago, I asked her to also take me to her family. The excuses became too many, too often. It was either, “It’s a long journey home,” or “My parents are not there at the moment,” or “My dad is sick. Let’s wait until he gets better.”

I’ve survived these excuses for one year until I told her I couldn’t stand it any longer. “If you’re not ready to marry me, let me know so I know the next steps to take.” She accused me of rushing and told me marriage was a long journey, so we didn’t need to rush.

Finally, she agreed to take me home to meet her parents, but before that, she took me to meet her elder sister. On our way there, she told me, “In case she asks you what you do, don’t say it. Just find something else to tell her.”

Her sister didn’t ask, but I asked why she didn’t want me to tell her sister what I did for a living, and she retorted, “It’s none of her business.”

We are going to meet her parents next week, and again, she has asked me to tell them something different when they ask about my job.

I’m a teacher. I teach in SHS, and my dream is to do a PhD and go a step higher in the teaching field. It has always been my dream to be a teacher. I excel there. I see the kids I have taught and what they are doing in life, and I’m proud of myself.

But for some reason, the woman I’m about to marry and commit my future to doesn’t want her family to know I’m a proud teacher. I asked why she would have me say anything else apart from being a teacher, and she told me she just doesn’t want them to know what I do.

“Are you ashamed of my profession?”

“Why would I date you if I didn’t like your profession?”

“So why don’t you want them to know?”

“I just don’t want them to know. Is that too hard to understand?”

Should I go ahead with this introduction? Or is this a waving flag of an incoming war? I don’t hide who I am, so why should I marry someone who doesn’t want her family to know who I actually am?
