He said it through a text message, and I told him to stop playing. Days later, while I was happily talking to him on the phone, he said it was a confession, so I shouldn’t joke with it. I went quiet for a while and then told him even if that was the case, I didn’t care.

He sighed heavily and then said, “How should I say it for you to know I’m not joking?”

We’ve dated for over three years, me and Adolf. The first time he proposed to me, I laughed it off and asked him what gave him the audacity to tell me that. He told me he had loved me for a very long time and he couldn’t hide it any longer. I replied, “Go and fall in love with your age mates. I’m not your size.”

I’m four years older than Adolf, and I didn’t see why I should fall in love with him. But one afternoon, I received a gift through delivery, and everything changed from there. It was a perfume in a small bottle. I loved the fragrance once I sprayed it. When he called and asked if I’d received the gift, I told him I wanted to see him that very evening.

When we met, I thanked him and said I would be his girlfriend. No more playing hard to get. The fact that I was older than him didn’t matter. He had been thoughtful enough to send me a perfume. That was all I needed to be in love with him.

My friends didn’t understand. Some of them laughed and asked if I was joking with them. They saw our relationship as a joke, but time and tides let them know it wasn’t a joke. Adolf wasn’t working when the relationship started. It didn’t bother me. I told him I would do anything to help him get the job he needed. I carried his CV over my head. I asked my friends if they had a vacancy where they worked.

I shared my salary with him. I bought him gifts. I cooked for him, and whenever he asked for money, I gave it to him. On Sundays, I would dress up, walk to his place and ask him to go to church with me. He was living with his parents. They saw how much I cared for their son and started calling me their in-law.

When they didn’t see their son in the house, they knew he was with me. We went up and down for over a year before Adolf finally got a job. I called the period he wasn’t working the trial times of our relationship. We didn’t break up because I was supportive, and when he got a job, I expected the same loyalty and depth of love from him, but things started to change.

Within a year, I caught him twice with two different women. He had rented a new place and had moved from his parents’ house. I paid half of the rent. The bed in his room, I bought it, both the bed frame and the mattress. I helped decorate his room to make it feel like home. I wanted it to have my presence, so I sent my TV to his room and other things I didn’t have use for.

Instead of seeing his place as a nest for the two of us, he started welcoming other women in. The first girl I caught him with was an SHS graduate who had started growing permed hair. She was so young I questioned what he saw in her. He lied about her, but a few weeks later, I caught them in his room. On the same bed I bought with my money.

We had come too far to allow a little girl to break us apart. I forgave him even when he hadn’t asked for forgiveness. I fought the girl off and even had to threaten her. Just when I had been able to see the back of the little girl, another appeared. I found out through his phone. I picked the girl’s number and pleaded with her to stay away from my boyfriend. She laughed at me and called me “Abriwa,” an old woman.

As I write this, he’s still dating this lady, and I believe it was the reason he said what he said on the phone, the one he later said was a confession. You remember at the beginning of the story I said he told me something? The one where he asked how he should tell me for me to know it wasn’t a joke.

He said he used juju on me, and it was time for him to confess. He did “For Girls” on me, and he got me. He said the one who did it for him said it would last for a year and everything would dissipate. When I didn’t believe him, he repeated that it was a confession, so I should let it get me angry and leave him alone.

In my mind, he was using that to make me leave the relationship for the new girl, so I brushed it off until he told me the fetish priest who did it wanted to see the two of us and break it, or else I would never have a good marriage or be happy in my relationships.

I asked how he did it. He told me that perfume he gave me was the conduit. Once I sprayed it on myself, the juju started working. He said the fact that I don’t believe him is also part of the working process of the spell he cast on me. I’m thirty-three years old. He’s twenty-nine. He was only twenty-six when this relationship started. We celebrated his 27th birthday a few months after.

Now I’m even scared of the whole thing. Starting all over again from here is scary, but what he’s telling me is scarier. And now he’s telling me no one should know about it, or else we’ll both run mad. We should because I’ve shared the story here. I’m a Christian. I won’t follow him to that place. I’m only praying about it, and so far, I believe I’m seeing changes in my life.
