During last year’s Valentine’s Day, I traveled to surprise my boyfriend with a new laptop, something he had been praying for for a very long time. I saved for a year to be able to afford it because I loved him so much, and he had come through for me on so many occasions. We had dated for good two years, and everything showed we were headed in the right direction.

I knocked on his door and waited to see how shocked he would be. I knocked again and again with no response. Just when I was about to call him on the phone, the door swung open and he appeared. The shock on his face made me smile. He spoke in whispers, “What are you doing here? Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”
I said, “At least, let me in and let’s talk.”
“I can’t let you in. Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”
He locked the door and went back in. I knew there was someone in there, but I loved him too much to cause him embarrassment, so I waited outside, hoping he was going to dress up and come back. When I waited for several minutes and he wasn’t coming, I called his phone. It was off. I didn’t knock again. I didn’t want to get him angry.
I texted him, “I came to surprise you with a laptop. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, but I mean no harm.”
I waited again until it was getting dark. I went back to the station and got a car back home, with my heart aching as if I was being operated on without anesthesia. I came home and waited for his call all night. I called him once more, and the phone was still off. I woke up the next morning and saw his message: “I’m on my way. I want to see you so we can talk about it.”
I was excited but still in pain. It was just an hour’s drive, but this guy got to my place around 10 p.m. All the while I was waiting for him, the little voice in my head kept telling me, “Are you going to allow this guy back into your life? You’ll accept his lies and still give him another chance? You deserve whatever bad thing that comes your way.”
I wanted to call and ask where he was, but I didn’t. I even thought he wasn’t coming. I was tired of waiting and was about to sleep until I heard a knock on the door, and then his voice followed, “Emelia, it’s me.” I smiled to myself, turned to the other side, and slept. When the knock got too loud, I put my earpiece in my ears. When he started calling my phone, I put it on DND.
In the morning, I saw his message: “Is that how you want to do it? Tit for tat? Let’s see.” I texted back, “There’s nothing to see. Enjoy your life.” And then I blocked him.
What Will Make You Leave Me After Forty Years Of Marriage?
It’s almost a year now, and I look back and thank myself for the decision not to welcome him back into my life. I gave the laptop to my brother, and to date, he tells me it’s the best gift I’ve ever given him. Thank God for the little voice He placed in our heads, and I’m grateful for the heart that listens. It’s the reason I’m in better arms this year.
