My girlfriend told me one day that an elder in our church had proposed to her. I called her a liar. She showed me the messages where Elder Boateng had said in plain words that he wanted her to be his girlfriend. He said, “I will change your life. Even if you want to travel abroad, I will facilitate that. Just say yes.”

This is a very respectable married man in the church ooo. His wife is very calm and graceful.  He’s everywhere in the church and on boards. Whenever money is needed, he’s the one the church calls. Everyone knows him as the rich man who loves God, the reason he was made an elder of the church.

We laughed about it, and I even thanked my girlfriend for letting me know. I told her, “I have to do fast and marry you before these rich men carry you away.”

It’s not my fault that we are not married after dating for two years. We started from a humble beginning. She wasn’t even working when we started dating. I was the one supporting her until she found a job. We had given ourselves just a year to start preparing towards marriage.

Anytime we went to church and saw Elder Boateng, we laughed at him. When I saw her talking to him, I would ask, “What is your boyfriend saying? Is he trying to take you to the moon where I can’t find you again?”

When I saw him outside the church, I would call my girlfriend and tell her that I had seen her sugar daddy. It was all fun until one day, something pushed me to check her phone and see what was going on. I tried getting into it and realised she had changed her password.

It dawned on me that something was going on. I spent every moment I had with her trying to decipher her password, and finally, I did.

She had been travelling with the man to places no one in my family could afford. I checked all the images shared between them. It was either Elder Boateng sending her photos he had taken with his phone or she was sending him crazy, naughty photos of herself.

I screamed in my head, “Eiii, is that how far my girlfriend can go?” I had dated her for that long, but I never thought she was capable of doing “Snap and Send.”

I woke her up and showed her the messages. She jolted and snatched the phone from me. “What are you looking for on my phone?” she asked.

I responded, “I was looking for Elder, and I think I have found him.”

My heart was breaking, but I couldn’t shout or even be angry. I was waiting for her to say sorry, but she leaned against the wall while going through her phone. Neither of us slept again.

In the morning, she walked out without saying a word. Then she texted later in the day, “You’ve seen what you’re looking for. I assume it is over, right?”

The sad thing was, I still loved her and wanted the relationship to continue if only she would tell me she was sorry and wouldn’t do it again.

No apology. Nothing. Just cold.

I didn’t respond. Later, she texted, “Silence means consent. Thank you for everything you did for me. Too bad it had to end this way. I’m sorry.”

I’m still nursing my heartbreak two months later. I haven’t been to church. I haven’t spoken to anyone about it. I’m just keeping it all in until one day healing finds me.
