I knew Angela had a sugar daddy sponsoring her lifestyle, but I hadn’t met him in person. She talked about him lovingly, the things he’d done for her and what he was about to do. We were friends living together and did most things together, but when it came to relationships, we approached them differently.

I had a boyfriend who didn’t have it all, but I believed in growth. When you put a seed underground, it may stay in darkness and dirt for a very long time, but one day it will sprout. It will grow roots and leaves and finally bear fruit. That’s how I saw relationships, so I stuck with the one person I was in a relationship with.

Angela treated relationships differently. She had someone she was growing with, but she believed that wasn’t enough, so she got herself a sugar daddy, a man who bought her what she needed and took her to places her boyfriend couldn’t afford. I didn’t judge her. I played my part, and she also played hers.

Overall, she was a very good friend who loved taking care of me. Whatever she had, she shared with me. For instance, we had been living in a very bad place where even fresh air was hard to come by. When she got the money and rented this place, she moved in with me. I didn’t pay a pesewa. That aside, she didn’t mind taking care of the household all by herself whenever things were good for her. I called her my husband.

So one day, when her sugar daddy called and asked her to meet him in town, she asked me to go with her. I hurriedly got myself ready and followed her.

It was all luxury where we ended up meeting the man. A few minutes after we settled down, another man joined us. He said they were very good friends and that this new man had just returned from abroad and was looking to unwind. We ate. We drank. We had beautiful and fun conversations. But throughout the night, the new man who joined us, Mr Antwi, had his attention on me.

He changed seats to sit next to me and asked Angela to move to his seat. Angela’s sugar daddy joked that the night was perfect because everyone had one woman. I took it as a joke until, at the end of the night, Mr Antwi asked me to spend the night with him. I was like, “So dem dey do for here? Just like that?”

I said no.

Angela winked at me. I didn’t know what she meant. I kept shaking my head. I told him I’d just met him and couldn’t simply get up and follow him like that. He said he wasn’t a bad person and that he had liked me all night. He was virtually begging me to follow him home. I declined respectfully and told him we should do it another time.

While we were going home, Angela tried to convince me to say yes to the man.

“He’s rich,” she said. “He can take care of you to the extent that your family will also benefit.”

I shook my head. She tried harder, even telling me the man wasn’t married when I could clearly see a ring on his finger. I still said no.

The next day, when her sugar daddy called her, he asked to speak to me. On the phone, he invited me on another outing and also pleaded with me to say yes to his friend.

“Am I the only woman on earth?” I asked myself.

I accepted the invitation, but when I hung up, I told Angela I wasn’t going. I reminded her that I had a boyfriend and wasn’t ready to take on another love project I might not complete.

From that day, Angela started frowning at me. She wouldn’t talk to me the whole day and would give me awkward answers whenever I asked her a question. My boyfriend visited me, and she told me to meet him outside because she wanted to do something in the house. She and my boyfriend had always been on very good terms, ooo, but that day my boyfriend greeted her, and she didn’t respond.

I asked her, “Why this new behaviour? Is it about the man I said no to? Because everything changed from that day.”

She said she was okay and didn’t have any explanation for me.

In less than two weeks, she pushed me out twice to go and meet my boyfriend outside. I asked her to be honest with me and tell me if she didn’t want me around anymore.

She answered, “I can’t decide that for you. Decide for yourself.”

As we speak, she’s turned off the fridge in the house just when I’d stocked it with food for the week. She said she was taking the fridge to her parents’ place. The fridge is still here after over a week. Slowly, she’s shutting my life down around here.

I get it, but she’s someone I call my best friend. Without her, I have no one. I can’t count the number of times she’s come through for me. I even owe her money, which I’m scared she’ll ask for because I can’t pay it back.

Everything shows she doesn’t want me around here, but I have nowhere to go. I’ve saved some money, but it isn’t enough to pay rent for even a year. Even if I force myself to rent a place with my savings, what will I eat?

I need my friend back, when all we had was laughter and kindness. This new Angela is too harsh and brash. She’s destroying everything we’ve built over the years. I don’t want to lose her friendship, but what can I do when everything she does shows she wants me out?
