It was a few minutes past midnight. We had stayed up all night watching movies, cuddling, and having conversations about the adventurous lives we were going to live once we were financially stable. I guess all that talk about our future got him so excited. He said he didn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day but at midnight, he kissed me and whispered, “I’m glad you are my Valentine.” I smiled, blushed when he moved to kiss my neck, and then giggled when he tickled me.

Within a few minutes, wild laughter turned to intense passion. That’s how his head ended up down there. It wasn’t the first time he had gone down on me, and neither was it the first time I came while he was there but there was something special about this particular moment. Things were so intense that, for the first time ever, I screamed during intimacy. When I finished he had a smug smile on his face.

He asked me, “How is your first Valentine’s Day with a boyfriend going so far?” My only answer was a shy smile. He was not wrong. I had been single my entire life until Cheri came along. Every Valentine’s Day had come to meet me single. And I spent all of them with my best friend until that year. I had Cheri so Diana and I didn’t make plans.

I had been trying to make plans with Cheri a whole month before Valentine’s Day but he kept saying it wasn’t his thing. So I decided to just let the day pass. However, that morning I couldn’t help but ask my boyfriend, “Are you sure you don’t want us to go out later in the day? We can go to the beach.” He shook his head, “No, I am not going out. I told you I don’t celebrate these events.” A part of me wanted to let it go but another part of me was also determined to win so I didn’t drop it.

When he was in the bathroom taking a shower, I was there telling him, “Just because you don’t celebrate these things doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a try. We can go out at night if you don’t want to go anywhere during the daytime.” Again, he shook his head and said no.

When he finished bathing and started dressing up, I was buttoning his shirt while saying, “You know, we can go to the night beach. We can find a private place and try out one of our fantasies by doing it at the beach.” That got his attention. He threw his hands in the air and said, “Fine. I’ll do it so you’ll stop bugging me. We will do the night beach.” I was elated to finally have a man to spend this special day with.

It was a Saturday but he had to go do a few things at work. The beach was closer to his place than mine so we agreed to go to his place together. I would stay there while he went to work. Then he would come home and we would go to the beach.

About an hour to Cheri’s return, Diana called me. She asked me to meet her at our favorite hangout spot. It’s a park with a garden and different restaurants and bars attached to it. I told her I was going to the beach with my boyfriend and she got upset. “When did you start spending Val’s day without me?” She asked. I told her we didn’t make plans so I made plans of my own.

She didn’t take it well. She reminded me of the fact that spending the day together was our thing. Even though she was in a relationship, she always spent it with me. “So why are you blowing me off the one time you are not single?” Honestly, I felt bad. It had been the two of us most of the time. So the fact that I was changing things all of a sudden didn’t sit well with me. Besides, my boyfriend wasn’t that excited about us going out.

I called Cheri and told him about Diana’s disappointment when I told her I already made plans with him. He told me to go out with her and that he was tired from the day’s work. “Are you sure you are okay canceling last minute?” I asked him repeatedly. Each time he said, “Yes, go ahead. I will be home so you can pass by after your girl’s night out.” I was more than happy to have an understanding boyfriend.

Diana and I went to our place ready to eat as much junk food as possible, drink lots of wine, and have some girl time. At least that’s what I thought. To my utter dismay, my best friend asked me to excuse her the moment we got seated. For almost an hour, she was nowhere to be found. I called her but she left her phone with me.

When she got back she had no apologies. She told me she saw her boyfriend around so he must’ve been there with another girl. She was tracking him. That was why she talked me into going to the park with her. She knew she would find him there.

As soon as she shared this information with me, she took off again, telling me she was going to check if the food we ordered was ready. For another thirty minutes, I had no idea where she went. The food came but she was nowhere to be found. It was at that point that I went looking for her. Guess where I found her? With her boyfriend. They were all cozied up in one of the bars.

For the first time in our friendship, I was angry at her. She followed me to our table and started acting as if the night was about just the two of us. I asked her, “Why did you guilt me into canceling plans with my boyfriend only for you to abandon me to go be with your boyfriend?” She didn’t see anything wrong with what she did. She kept saying it wasn’t a big deal so I was being dramatic.

I was too angry to say much so I told her I had to leave. I couldn’t even touch the food even though it was my favorite. She tried to convince me to stay but I didn’t. I called Cheri and told him what happened with Diana. He was calm while I ranted. When I finished he asked me to come over. Is he the sweetest boyfriend or what? Wait for it.

I got to this guy’s place only for him to pick a fight with me. It turned out he didn’t mean it when he gave me the go-ahead to go out with Diana. He just said he was okay with it to make me happy. But when it turned out that Diana chose her man over me, it made him more angry. He said I didn’t prioritize myself. That was why my friend did that to me.

I was also angry at him. “Next time you don’t like something, say it immediately. Don’t wait to pick up a fight with me when I am already in a bad mood,” I yelled. He yelled back, “I didn’t want to go anywhere but you convinced me to go to the beach and I got all excited. But the moment your friend called, you canceled on me. You treat me like a second option when it comes to her.” I said more stuff and he also said hurtful things. The fight only ended when I stormed out of his place in tears.

He came after me but I was in a taxi by the time he got outside. I went home and spent the night angry and crying. At some point, I stopped crying and started laughing. I started the day with a man in my bed and a mind-blowing orgasm, only to end the day alone and in tears. Looking back at that moment, I still find it hilarious.

I learned a few things about relationships that night. If I hadn’t pushed Cheri to make plans with me that day, we wouldn’t have had a fight at all. But it took that fight for him to finally tell me he felt relegated to the back bench whenever my best friend was on the scene. I heard him and I made changes going forward.

Another thing I learned was to stop allowing my emotions to make decisions for me. If I had firmly told Diana I already had plans, I would have ended my day on a happier note. So while my first Val’s Day with a boyfriend didn’t end well, it is the most memorable Valentine’s Day of my life.

Cheri is now married with kids while I remain single. Diana and I are still best friends but we have never spent another Valentine’s Day together since that awful incident nine years ago. So this year, I am going to buy myself some flowers, cook my favorite meal, drink some wine, and toast to finally accepting and falling in love with myself.
