My wife is friends with a lady who lives a few blocks away from us in this estate. They were friends long before the lady’s husband returned from abroad. My wife came home one day with a box full of things; shoes, perfumes, dresses, and accessories. You name it, it was in the box. She told me the lady’s husband had given them to her. I didn’t complain. I even teased her about whether she was going to open a boutique.

Suddenly, everything was about the lady’s husband. The man would take both of them out and come back late in the evening. During the day, my wife would go over there and spend hours. She would return with stories about the man’s life and the things he’d been doing for his wife.

It started to irritate me, so I warned my wife not to go there again. “Allow the couple to bond. Stop interfering in their lives.”

My wife didn’t take it lightly, and it turned into an argument. I told her if I saw her there again, she should pack her things and go live with them.

She didn’t go there, but the lady would come here to fetch her. If my wife said she didn’t want to go, the lady would use her husband’s name just to pull her along. What annoyed me most was how my wife behaved when she heard the man’s name. It was as if she had heard from God.

One afternoon, the lady came here, and I told her my wife wasn’t around. My wife shouted from inside, “Oh, I’m here! I’ll be with you soon.”

When she came out, I told both of them, “I don’t want to hear one day that my wife is sleeping with your husband. You women are like that. Your friendships don’t usually last because one will end up sleeping with what belongs to the other. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

It’s been a week, and I haven’t seen the lady here. My wife doesn’t talk to me. She said I told the lady she was sleeping with her husband. I didn’t say that. I only spoke about the probability. She wants me to apologize to the lady and say I didn’t mean what I said. I will never do that, and I’ve told her so. If this is what keeps my wife at home, then so be it.

Or do you believe I went too far?
