My mom is cheating on my dad. I saw it long ago and said nothing about it. My mom got to know recently that I knew about her cheating ways. I was expecting her to be remorseful or even tell me it was a mistake. Her reaction and what she told me is the reason I’m sharing this story today.

My biological dad didn’t marry my mom. I don’t know much of their story, but I grew up knowing that I was born without a father. My mom called my dad names, including irresponsible, and called my dad’s family a bunch of witches and wizards. I figured the reason they couldn’t marry had to do with my dad’s family.

I saw my biological dad when I was thirteen years old. By then, my mom had remarried, and the man she married had become my dad. He took care of me like he birthed me. When I needed something, my mom could tell me to go and ask my stepdad, and when I did, this man provided with joy on his face.

It was hard for me thinking he wasn’t my biological father. I called him Dad. When I met my biological dad, I wondered what name I should call him. He said, “I’m your dad. The real one.” And then he smiled. I looked lost, but I could find myself in his shadow. I looked like him. That day, he gave me money. He promised to visit me in school.

When I returned home, my mom asked what I thought about him, and I told her I didn’t want to see him again. She whispered, “Don’t say that. He now wants to take care of you and take you to a better school. Play his child even if you don’t like him.”

I was in SHS one then. He came to visit once, but my stepdad visited more often. Anytime he had a business to attend to and he used the stretch leading to my school, he would come there, even when it wasn’t visiting hours. He never visited empty-handed. God, I love this man, and sometimes I cried that he wasn’t my biological father, but he is the biological father of my younger siblings.

I’m currently twenty-three years old and in the university. I came back home one day and used my mom’s phone. I realized she was on TikTok and Facebook, and that got me laughing. “What is she doing there?”

My mom can hardly write, though she speaks English well. While going through her Facebook feed, a message dropped on WhatsApp from a name she had saved as Theo. I checked the messages, and most of them were voice notes. I listened to a few and immediately got to know how it was going. My mom didn’t sound right. Her voice sounded like a child trying to be romantic.

The next day, while she slept, I listened to everything. My mom had been seeing Theo for over three years. This Theo knew my biological father. My biological father and Theo were friends when my mom was dating my biological father. That’s the surprising part for me. Theo had relocated to where we lived and found my mom. That was when the cheating started.

My mom is forty-eight years old. A woman her age and history shouldn’t be doing this. I was sad. I couldn’t talk in the house for days, but I didn’t question her or give any signs that I knew about her cheating ways until recently, when she found out that I knew about it.

There was a message I read before she could read it. She came to ask me if I had been reading her messages, and I said yes. She was quiet for a while. “Why? Is that what you do when you take my phone?” I answered, “Is that what you do behind Dad’s back?”

Then she warned, “You’re a child. You don’t know everything I’m going through. If he gets to know about it, I will never forgive you. You won’t have to attend my funeral, I’m telling you.”

And then she walked away. I thought as the days went by, she would come to me and speak sense about the issue and even tell me it’s not going to happen again. Guess what? She has zero regrets and obviously continues to cheat on my stepdad with Theo.

I despise her. When I see her, I see a walking sin. I hate her more when she tries to correct my younger siblings. I see how innocent my stepdad is and how he smiles freely without a care. How he gives. How he takes his fatherly role seriously. I ask myself, “What else is he not doing right that my mom would cheat?”

I don’t intend to tell him. Not in a thousand years, but I pray he finds out, and when he does, he should never forgive my mom. Knowing the kind of man he is, he should take his children and send my mom away. She doesn’t deserve any good things in life if she can betray a man like my stepdad!
