I am a 28-year-old woman from central Kenya. In my entire lineage, we do not have any men. No great-grandfathers, no grandfathers, no uncles, no brothers, no husbands, no sons, and no nephews. Ours is an all-female family.

My great-grandmother never married but had 10 daughters. Sadly, eight of them died young. Only two survived. Both my grandmothers also never married but they gave birth to only daughters.

Just like the women before them, my mother and her sisters never married, yet they had kids. All of them have only daughters as well. My mother gave birth to five daughters, and we too have only given birth to girls. None of us are married.

During Christmas family gatherings, it feels like a women’s conference. Sometimes there’s a fiancé in the picture, but it never progresses to marriage. We are blessed, but I keep asking myself—why don’t we men in the family? Not even a male child?

I look at my two lovely daughters and worry that I might also never have a son. I am still single. Could this be my destiny? I wonder if there are families out there like ours.
