Linda and I met through a WhatsApp group created by our school after we gained admission to one of the public universities in Ghana in 2019. That was the beginning of something special.
We became very close friends. We moved together in everything we did. None of us did anything without the other. In the lecture hall, we always sat side by side. If she arrived first, she would find a seat for me. If I arrived first, I did the same for her. It was a bond that felt unbreakable.

Our friendship grew so strong that people began teasing us. They called her my wife and me her husband. I didn’t mind. In fact, I felt proud. Linda was a beautiful lady. Fair, slim, and tall. Just the kind of woman I admired.
By the time we reached level 300, I had become a student leader in my department. Linda wasn’t into student politics, but she supported me in every way she could. Quietly, faithfully, always in the background.
My feelings for her deepened. I started imagining a future with her. I wondered if she could be my wife after school. But I was afraid. Afraid that if I told her how I felt, I might lose her as a friend. Still, every time another guy tried to get close to her, I felt jealous. I didn’t want anyone to take her away from me.
So I confided in a friend of mine. She was also a lady, and she encouraged me to go ahead and tell Linda how I felt. She said maybe Linda would accept me, since she already knew me so well.
One evening, I told Linda I would come to her house after a meeting. She replied, “I can’t wait to have you here.” Her words lit up my heart. After the meeting, I rushed to her house. She welcomed me warmly and even led me into her uncle’s room so we could talk privately.

I looked her in the eyes and told her the truth. I had fallen in love with her. I asked if she could give me a chance. She told me she was already seeing someone, but she didn’t trust him. She asked me to give her some time to think about it.
I said okay. But from that moment, everything changed. Our friendship faded. We were no longer close. We drifted apart until we graduated.
Today, she is married with a child. And I am also with someone. We just completed the knocking ceremony, and I will be getting married soon. Yes, I was heartbroken. But I didn’t fight it. I accepted it. I believe she was not meant for me.
Sometimes, love doesn’t end the way we hope. But it teaches us something. And I will always remember Linda with love.
