I was with my friend Charles when we met her at a beach event. She was standing next to us, alone. It was Charles who started engaging with her, and I followed. It was fun all afternoon, and we even invited her to have a drink with us. She was bubbly and also a bit naive. I fell in love with that side of her and decided to pursue her further and see how it would end.

I asked for her number, and she gave it to me. When the event was over, I asked where she was going, and she said home. She sat next to me in the back seat while Charles drove us to a junction where she said she could easily get a car back home. We stood there and waited until she got a car.

We kept talking from that night. She was enthusiastic. She called when she didn’t hear from me for some time. When we talked, she asked about Charles and asked me to extend her greetings to him. I always did. Charles even gave me the motivation to make her my girlfriend, and for several weeks I worked toward that.

We had other outings. Charles came for some of them, and each time he came with us, he was the one who drove us home. I proposed to her, and she asked for time to think about it. During that period, we had several other dates. It took her almost a month to say yes to my proposal.

We went out to celebrate. Charles was there. We called that night “Outdooring.” It was me outdooring my new girlfriend to the world.

A few days after accepting the proposal, she texted me, “I don’t think I’m doing the right thing. I’m no longer interested in the relationship.”

I was like, “Ah, what happened? What changed? We were happy yesterday, so what made you unhappy today?”

She kept saying she didn’t think she was doing the right thing, but I didn’t think that was enough of an answer. I pressed and pushed until she told me, “I was actually interested in Charles. I thought he was interested in me too but couldn’t say it and was using you to get to me.”

I thanked her for being honest, but deep down, I was crashing in pain. Charles didn’t say or do anything to show he was interested in her. Right from the start, it was all me, so how did Charles enter the conversation?

Anyway, I haven’t told Charles about it. It took me weeks to even tell him we were no longer together. When he asked what happened, I responded, “She already has a boyfriend. She lied to me.”

“Women!” he responded.
