My girlfriend has a friend called Amanda. According to her, they have been friends since they were young. Amanda looked very wild but my girlfriend was the calm one. I didn’t like Amanda right from the start because I thought she was a bad influence, but my girlfriend supported her anytime her issues came up in conversation.

We went out one evening and met Amanda and her boyfriend at the same place. We introduced each other and after that we decided to share a table. Amanda’s boyfriend seemed very calm and didn’t talk a lot so after the date I told my girlfriend, “How can a calm guy like this be dating Amanda?”

She laughed. She said it was good for balance and maybe it was the boyfriend who would be able to calm Amanda down.

If my girlfriend had to go anywhere, it was with Amanda and it was always Amanda’s decision. They would go for parties and weddings and even dress for a funeral as if they were attending a naming ceremony. I’m not the outing type. Suzzy, my girlfriend, is also not the kind of person who would get up and say let’s go here or there. We preferred to stay inside and enjoy each other.

But she had Amanda who, once in a while, spiced her life up. One evening I went to my girlfriend’s place unannounced. She wasn’t home. When I called, she told me she was with Amanda. She called me on a video call and I saw Amanda’s boyfriend in the background. I asked what was going on and she said nothing really, but if she had told me to attend with her, I wouldn’t have done it.

It was later in the night that she called to tell me she was going to spend the night with Amanda. I didn’t think much of it because her life had always been Amanda first before anything else.

She came to my place to watch Netflix and because I was watching football, she connected her laptop to the Wi-Fi and watched Netflix from there. She fell asleep while watching and when I took her laptop to turn Netflix off, I realized her WhatsApp was open on the laptop. She had opened a chat with Amanda.

I put the laptop on my lap and started reading their chat. At one point my heart seized. I nearly screamed out of shock and if I did, she would have woken up and seen me reading her chat.

Days before Amanda’s birthday, Suzzy asked Amanda what she wanted for her birthday and Amanda said, “Why are you asking me this when you already know what I want? I told you to speak to Charles and let us cross this off our bucket list.”

I’m the Charles she was talking about so I quickly searched my name in their chat and everything they had said about me appeared. Amanda had always wanted to have a “3som” and she had discussed it extensively with Suzzy and Suzzy also seemed to be down with it. The only thing standing in their way was the man.

Amanda told Suzzy, “Speak to Charles about it. What man in this world would say no to this? Unless you want to end up marrying him, then I will understand.” My girlfriend responded, “I would love to involve him but I know that guy. He would say no and tell me he was raised well and that would end our relationship.”

They spent miles of chats talking about how to slowly get me into it. Suzzy said she would try and see what would happen. The conversation didn’t come up again until Amanda, a few days to her birthday, said, “Ro will do it. I talked to him about it. He’s ready for us if you’re ready.”

Ro is Amanda’s boyfriend, the same guy we met and got introduced to at the outing.

The next time I read about the “3som” again in their chat, it had happened and they were talking about it. My girlfriend said it was awkward from the beginning because Ro wasn’t paying attention to her. Amanda answered, “If he paid attention to you more than me, it would have been the end of our relationship.”

Then they both exchanged laughing stickers. I stopped reading and sighed. My heart was pounding faster than the heart of a sprinter. I looked at her sleeping innocently as if she wouldn’t hurt a fly. I went back to the chat and Amanda was like, “You see how easily Ro accepted to do it? Talk to Charles. He might surprise you.”

They talked about the next one and how they wanted it to happen and where they wanted to do it and according to Amanda, she was dreaming about a day all four of us would do it together. Suzzy called her crazy. Amanda responded, “We are here for only a few hours ooo. Tomorrow we are dead and gone. Don’t chill and see.”

Suzzy woke up to see her laptop on my lap. I showed her what I was reading. “You’re out there doing all this with someone you call a friend? No wonder you always defend her. Is that what you’re defending? I thought you had your head screwed properly on your neck.”

She did a “huh” and threw herself back onto the sofa she had been sleeping on. I even thought she was crying. She got up and said, “I’m sorry. That’s all I can say. I can understand if you don’t want this relationship again but I promise you, this will never happen again even if you leave me tomorrow.”

While I was going up and down insulting her and calling her names and calling her behavior whorish, she remained calm with her face buried in her palms. She got up and said she was leaving. “What happened to your morals? Don’t you have any?” I questioned. She answered, “I’m leaving. I guess it’s the end.”

She left but I still think of her. Suzzy was lovely, very slow to anger but assured in the way she loved me and showed it. Amanda is evil but I can’t blame Amanda. Suzzy isn’t a child. She knows right from wrong. She did it because she wanted to and that’s what hurts me the most anytime I think about it.

Currently, I don’t know where we stand. I’ve called her to ask how she was doing. We talked nicely and ended the call. I’ve texted her too but reconciliation hasn’t come up and I doubt it will. To be honest, I still think of her.
