It is safe to say that I am my boss’s right-hand person here in Ghana. We work closely together. The company I work in gives out loans, motor vehicle and business insurance, sells medical equipment.
My boss has been wicked towards me in so many ways. I don’t know if I have wronged him in any way. I am not being sentimental or anything, but these past months have proven to me that I cannot tie my entire existence to this office because I will be replaced easily.

I am the heart of the firm here in Ghana. We work hand in hand. A lot of days, he puts confidential documents in my hands and expects me to work on them, run errands for him, and represent him at meetings at times. Even outside the firm, it’s me.
I can boldly say he has never asked me if I have any challenges, but he does ask others during Zoom meetings or when he is in Ghana. He lives in the US.
I needed a loan to settle my MBA fees, so I applied for a loan. I didn’t receive a response from him. I figured I had sent it at the wrong time, so it may have skipped him, and I sent it again.
His response was, “I am sorry to inform you that the company doesn’t have enough to lend out this quarter. All the best.”
I had placed all of my hope on the loan. Things were tough for me. I had to use all my salary to settle my fees. Even money to board a car to work was a problem. I was not able to attend classes and resorted to perching with my course mate to understand what was being taught in class.
In the midst of this, I was owing rent. Who do I call then? I decided to try again, and still didn’t receive any positive feedback. Same old message.
He said the firm was facing setbacks. Clearly, the firm was growing and flourishing, but my boss said the company didn’t have enough to give out as loans to workers.
I was hospitalised for two days. I was at work when I felt nauseous, cold, and feverish. I was still trying to work, but I noticed it was not getting any better, so I sought permission and left for the hospital immediately.
I sent all the evidence to him to prove I was indeed ill. I was hospitalised for two days.
On Wednesday, he called not to ask about my health, but just wanted to find out if I was at work. No, “How are you doing?” “Are you getting better soon?” Nothing like that.
I didn’t have any strength to respond to the questions about work and all, so I listened until he ended the call.
I wasn’t asking him for money, to be honest with you people. I have never and will never ask my boss to pay for my bills. Even though I don’t have much, the little I have, I am okay with it.
A few days later, I resumed the office and fell ill again.
I was at work when it started this time too. From a sharp abdominal pain to my back hurting seriously. My colleagues were throwing jokes at me, saying I should get a woman to put an end to all this sickness.
I thought it was also a joke, that the pain would end as soon as I got to the hospital, I would be prescribed paracetamol, and that would be it.
Until Tramadol was handed over to me and injected too.
I am to go back for more scans so we can figure out what’s next.
I was admitted for a couple of hours, so I decided to continue working on the accounts I was working on before I rushed to the hospital. The whole time I was there, my boss did not call even to find out how I was doing.
Meanwhile, this is someone whom I work closely with. Someone who trusts me with his work. So what am I? A tool? What?
Who Would You Choose, A Rich Man Or A Man Who’s Good In Bed?
This period of time has put a lot of things into perspective for me. And I have made my decision too.

One thing I have learnt about private businesses is that you can easily be replaced so do your best and leave the rest . Don’t kill yourself first them. They’ll betray you and count your loyalty as nothing
Richard, as you said, the two of you are close. Have a heart to heart conversation with him and let him know your challenges even if it means replacing you because your boss is being insensitive. He must learn to appreciate your effort. He thinks he pays you so that is enough. But No. Good human relationship can’t replace whatever he pays you.
Entrepreneurs, that’s how they behave
This story reminds me of when my eyes was very good and I needed fund for my eyes test and glasses, you can’t imagine what my boss said when I asked for a loan, he said his eyes can go blind, he as no money, and I had to source for funds elsewhere.
They don’t have the interest of their staff at heart no matter how loyal, oftentimes they see it as stupidity.
Start building your career and search for a better job or establish a business with the loan scheme at your office, you don’t need me to explain.
Start now to avoid future regrets, because that’s what I did and I’m doing great now.
Richy! Sorry for what you’re going through. And I wish you a speedy recovery.
Charlie, no where cool ooo bruh!
Sit yourself down and analyse everything. Is the salary ohk? Is the work too stressful? Ask all the necessary questions concerning the job.
As for your life, take full responsibility for it. Don’t look up to anybody because no one is coming to help you.
Take care of yourself, set boundaries, do your work and go home to yourself.
God be with you!!!
