So last Tuesday, I was standing by the roadside when an old friend from university, Kojo, pulled up in his car. “Ei Ama! Long time!” he shouted from the window. Before I could even say anything, he parked and came out to give me a hug. We exchanged small talk about life after school and little things about what we’d been up to.

I was so engrossed in the conversation I didn’t even notice people around me, not to talk of seeing my boyfriend walking by. Apparently… he saw everything and walked by quietly without making a sound.

Later that evening, my phone rang. It was him. I picked up with my sweet voice, ready to tell him how his call had come in exactly when I was thinking about him.

“Ama,” he said with that quiet-but-angry tone men use when they are about to misbehave, “so you now entertain your men by the roadside where the world can see you, right? Nice.”

I blinked. “Huh?”

“You saw me pass by,” he continued, “and you pretended like you didn’t know me all because of one guy in a Mercedes. You were shy to introduce me as a boyfriend, I know.” You think I’m a fool?”

I didn’t even know the guy’s car was a Mercedes. “Me? Saw you? Where? When? How?!”

In his mind, he had caught me red-handed cheating on him. He said he doesn’t want to be in a relationship where his woman is “entertaining men on the streets.”

I told him that I didn’t see him, that Kojo was an old friend from uni, and that it was a five-minute conversation. But when jealousy enters a man’s head, logic packs its bags and leaves. He says he’s done with me. Just like that.

Is this enough reason to break a two-year-old relationship? Was he already looking for ways and means to leave? It’s really bothering my mind how he would stop picking up my calls and responding to my texts. Should I continue begging him to forgive me?
