She had a dream of traveling abroad to practice nursing because, according to her, being a nurse in a country like Ghana is an insult. She had seen friends travel outside and, a few years later, they make it. She was my girlfriend. We had dated for two years, and the only thing that remained the same was her dream to travel abroad.

I kept asking her to be patient. She kept telling me patience wouldn’t get her there. She had talked to all her friends who had been able to travel outside, and they had told her how they did it. She knew every trick to get out of Ghana, but there wasn’t money.

So late last year, she sold their family land and also sold a land she herself had bought but hadn’t finished paying for. She asked me to help. I didn’t have the bulk money to help, but I gave her allowances and little monies to help her move around.

I suggested we get married before she traveled. She asked, “You have money for marriage, and you’re not using it to help me travel? What can’t I do when I travel outside? Or you are not aligned with the dream?”

At the final lap, she asked me to give her GHC10,000, and she would pay me once she got there. I asked her to be patient while I raised the money. In December, while everyone was planning to chill, I was waiting for my end-of-year bonus so I could top it up and give it to my girlfriend to travel.

I gave her the money, and in late January this year, she was able to leave the country to chase her dreams. She hasn’t paid the money, but a few days ago, after ghosting me for almost two weeks, she sent me a message: “My spiritual father said God has told him in a dream that I should let you go. I prayed about it and it’s true. So kindly find someone else to do life with.”

She thinks she has won. She better start arranging her things now because she’s coming home very soon. She wouldn’t know what made her decide to come back to Ghana, but one late hot afternoon she would arrive in the country and wonder where the heat is coming from.

If her spiritual father has the power to see, he better see what is coming to her this time.
