She told me, “Because of our relationship, my family has abandoned me. They told me to break up with you or else they won’t provide for my needs anymore. What do we do?” I was not happy to hear the girl I love tell me her family was forcing her hand to leave me. “We have come a long way, my dear. Are you just going to give up on us?” I asked her. She shook her head, “No, that’s not my plan. You know how much I love you. I want to fight for us, but it comes at a cost. I am no longer in school so my parents don’t owe it to me to provide for my needs. The best I can do is to get a job. But until that happens, I’m on my own.”

I was a struggling artist who didn’t have a regular job to keep me afloat but I told her, “This is what I will do to make things easier for you. From now till you get a job, I will give you GHC100 every week. Will that help?” She nodded and smiled. She was thankful. She said it would help. I barely made sales with my artwork, but I was determined to provide Beth with the weekly allowance I promised her so that she wouldn’t have to leave me. This is how deeply I love her. She could ask me to sell my kidney for her and I would do it in a heartbeat. If I could afford to give her more than GHC100 in a week, I would have done it.

After taking care of her for a while, my artwork stopped selling completely. So I stopped making them. My elder brother has a business so I focused my attention on helping my brother run his business. The money I earned wasn’t much but I did it so I could provide Beth’s weekly allowance. I started taking care of her when she completed SHS, and now it’s been two years. She still doesn’t have a job, so I did what I could for her. When Christmas was approaching, Beth told me, “I appreciate all that you’ve been doing for me to this point. However, there’s something I want for Christmas, and I wish you could get it for me.” “What is it?” I asked.

“I want to change my Infinix phone to an iPhone. I want iPhone 11. I’ve seen a lot of girls using it so I want one too. Can you get it for me?” She asked in the most angelic voice ever. I looked at her and asked, “Beth, you know I don’t have a job. My artworks no longer sell so I have stopped creating more. I only help my brother with his business so I can get something to save for your weekly allowance. How do you expect me to afford iPhone 11?” She shrugged, “You said you love me. You promised to give me the moon. And I am only asking for a phone, not the moon. So why are you complaining?” I didn’t want her to be disappointed so I stopped complaining and assured her that I would get her the phone.

I sacrificed the money I should have used to eat and shop for myself this Christmas. I also did a lot of odd jobs apart from taking care of my brother’s business. I was stretched thin and tired but I imagined the look of excitement on Beth’s face when I give her the iPhone, and it encouraged me to keep working hard. I didn’t rest until I raised the money to buy Beth the phone. I bought the phone for her, even though I don’t use an iPhone myself. I wrapped it nicely in a Christmas-themed wrapper and tied it with a bow. She visited me a few days ago and in the joy of the moment I told her, “I know it’s a little early but I have a Christmas present for you.” I watched with excitement as she unwrapped it. The look on her face when she saw that it was the phone she requested, truly made all my efforts worth it.

Beth was so happy about the phone that she couldn’t stop thanking me. I thought everything was fine in our relationship until I suggested we do something together as a couple during the holidays. That was when she told me, “This relationship is no longer working for me. I have met someone new so I want to give him a chance. Have a nice life.” “Ah, what’s the meaning of this?” I asked. She boldly told me, “It means I’m leaving you. What else will I mean?” I told her I didn’t deserve what she was doing. I reminded her of everything I had done for her. I mostly reminded her of the iPhone I bought for her just last week. She asked me, “Didn’t I already say thank you? So it means I don’t owe you anything.”

Before I could plead my case she blocked my number and blocked me everywhere on social media. The pain went straight to my head. It felt like I would lose my mind. I didn’t know what came over me but I started calling all our friends. I told them Beth had left me for another man. I lamented about the pain I felt in my head and the palpitations in my heart. I think I cried at some point. Everything is hazy so I don’t remember all the details. One of our mutual friends told me about the guy. Apparently, he was in the picture all along but I  was so busy working that I didn’t notice the little changes that were taking place. My friend even told me the guy’s name and got his number for me.

Around 8:00 PM last night, I called the guy. I wanted to speak to him man-to-man and plead with him to leave Beth for me. When he answered Beth was with him. As soon as the guy repeated my name to her hearing, she took the phone from him and started shouting at me. “What do you want from my man, Cobby? I am done with you so move on with your life. As you can tell, you caught us at a bad time. I am enjoying my Christmas holidays with my boyfriend, and we are having the best time ever.” Then she hung up on me. I tried to call the number back but it didn’t go through. She must have blocked me. If hearts made sounds when they broke, my heart would have sounded like the way waves crash against rocks. It would have been loud enough for her to hear wherever she was that night.

I am a mess right now. I can see people laughing and basking in the joy of the Christmas season but I don’t feel any joy. I looked forward to a happy time with the girl I love but here I am, feeling miserable as she is somewhere happy in another man’s arms. What will I do now? How do I deal with this?
