A year after marriage, I travelled abroad. While there, my wife called to tell me she had seen a good piece of land she thought we should buy. It belonged to a colleague at work who wanted to sell it. I didn’t have the full amount, so I sent half and later sent the rest of the money to completely pay it off.

A year later, I came back to Ghana when we had already started building a house on the piece of land. I resumed work and started pumping money into the project so we could move in as soon as possible.
The project is almost done, and we are thinking of how to finish it off and move into it as a family. Then it occurred to me I hadn’t seen any documentation on the land since I got back. I asked my wife for it, and she kept telling me she didn’t know where she had placed it but would look for it.
Once in a while, when it dawned on me that I hadn’t seen the papers, I asked, and she gave me the same excuse—that she hadn’t gotten the time to look for them.
So one Sunday afternoon after church, when I asked and she gave me the same excuse, I said, “We don’t live in a castle so big that we can’t search around. Let’s start. If it’s in this room, we should find it in a very short time.”
We searched and searched and searched. She even said she might have left them in her drawer at the office. I got concerned. “How can you not find something important like that?”
So the next day, I took my time to look at the places we didn’t check while searching. Lo and behold, the documents were in one of her small bags hidden inside one of her big bags.
I went through the documents, and they had only her name on them. I was like, “What’s happening here?” When I asked her why, she said it was because I wasn’t in Ghana to sign the documents. There was also one thing I noticed. The papers didn’t look like the original copies. They were all photocopies.
I asked about the original copies, and it also turned into another story. By this time, I knew something was going on, so I gave her a firm warning that if she didn’t produce those original copies, it would be the end of her.
The next day, when she was coming home, she came with her father and her elder brother. The long and short of the whole story is that she used the documents to secure a loan for her brother’s business, and her brother hasn’t been able to pay the loan, so the bank had threatened to take over our building twice without my knowledge.
Her father said, “So we are begging you, it’s now critical, so if you can help us pay the loan, please help so we don’t lose the property. With time, my son will pay whatever amount you pay the bank.”

My wife went with them that evening because if she stayed with me, it would have been another story. She’s currently with her family. Until they pay that loan and bring my documents, she’s not coming back into this house.
Her father owns a house. What annoys me the most is why they didn’t use their father’s house as collateral. I don’t think I have a marriage at this point, but trust me, I will make things right before it all comes to an end.
