I am at war with my own son, Samuel.
He is only three years old, so he is too young to understand what is happening between us, but I know it. If he were old enough to understand, he would probably see how much anger I carry inside me, how easily I roar at him over the smallest mistakes, and how quickly my hands turn against him.
I beat him over the slightest things. Something as simple as him opening the fridge and forgetting to close it can make me so angry that I feel like I have to punish him severely. Even while I am doing it, there is a part of me that knows I am wrong, but when the anger takes over, it becomes difficult to stop myself.

There are even times when I hate seeing him happy when I am hurting inside. When my anger takes over completely, I don’t want him close to me. I want him far away from my space. I find myself thinking terrible things, like maybe if I starve him of food or take away every little joy he has, the happiness inside him will disappear and perhaps the two of us can be miserable together. At least then, I tell myself, it would feel better somehow.
I know how terrible that sounds. Some mornings ago, while I was bathing him, I noticed the marks left by the cane all over his body. My heart broke; I knew I was the one who had caused those marks. Lately, Samuel has become inquisitive. “Mommy, do you want to beat me? Mommy, will you lock me inside today to cry while you go and roam? Mommy, I didn’t do this. Please don’t beat me.” Yesterday, after I finished bathing him, he looked at me and asked, “Should I kneel down?” He had done absolutely nothing wrong.
That was when I realised just how much fear I had created inside my own child.
I know he no longer trusts me, and that thought hurts me. As shocking as it may sound after everything I have admitted, I love this boy so much. I love him the way every mother loves her child, but something inside me is broken, and I don’t know how to fix it.
Samuel’s father sends us GH¢150 every month. He says that is all he can afford because he is not being paid much, but his attitude has always been that of someone who does not care. He is the kind of person who will never go the extra mile for you, no matter how badly you need him.
Since the day Samuel was born, I have carried most of the responsibility alone. I have tried everything to get his father to do more. I have shouted at him on the phone, gone to his house and made scenes, reported him to friends and family, and begged people to talk to him. He still is the same. So, I am everything to our son.
I want to be the best mother for my son, but everything is falling apart. I wake up every day feeling tired, exhausted, and at my lowest, and instead of giving my son the love and patience he needs, I end up taking my frustration on my son.
Samuel doesn’t know anyone as family apart from me. He doesn’t even know his father. He used to know my siblings, but we left the neighbourhood when he was two years old. He no longer remembers them. For him, I am practically the only family he knows.
I cannot survive losing him. I don’t even want to imagine anything happening to him, and I don’t want my anger to become the reason something terrible happens to the child I love so much.
I want to change.
I have been trying so hard to let go of the pain and anger inside me, but it has not been easy. how I am supposed to forgive myself for not giving Samuel the father he deserves and how I am supposed to become the mother he needs when I am struggling so badly myself.
I know I am hurting him. I know that the way I treat him is affecting him because a three-year-old child should not be constantly asking his mother whether she wants to beat him, and he should certainly not be asking whether he should kneel down when he has done nothing wrong.
I don’t want him to grow up afraid of me. I don’t want him to remember his childhood as a time when he was constantly being punished, shouted at and made to feel that he was never safe around his own mother.
Who Would You Choose, A Rich Man Or A Man Who’s Good In Bed?
I want to heal before I destroy the relationship between us. Has anyone ever been in a situation like this before? How did you overcome it? How did you learn to heal from your own pain and anger while still taking care of your child?
I felt that talking about this with someone might help me more than continuing to stay silent. That is why I decided to share this here.

Try to forgive and move on from the attitude of your son’s father. Everything you doing to your son is out of anger from his father. Seek help from a therapist.
First and foremost you need accountability for your actions which is what you have taken
2 remove your child from your problem knowing that he’s not part of it
3 Act as if the man is dead for in this way you will be able to control your emotions toward your son
I couldn’t even finish reading.
Samuel was with God chilling with angels when you had sex with his father and he came into the world.
You should be angry at yourself for choosing an irresponsible dad for him not the other way.
My heart is broken. This boy will grow and do same to his kids if he doesn’t heal. It’s called trauma.
For a mother to admit doing all this to her son is terrible. Issues like this need a follow up not just comments from strangers like us. I am so hurt reading this because i have a two year old bold and i can never imagine inflicting pain on my son because of anger. But i am not judging her.. She is wearing her won shoes and understands her situation than i do. She is willing to do better and perhaps the reason she is here. If you happen to read this, please seek help to heal. If you cannot afford such help, please reflect on your life. The answer for your anger is buried inside there.
No child deserves the treatment he is getting
You should first forgive yourself before you can start the healing journey.
All of Samuels family head have spoken. Please forgive yourself, then the partial irresponsible man will naturally be forgiven.
My heart breaks for you and I understand you so much. I was once a single mom before I remarried, two kids, and till date their father is still on and off in their lives. If you feel you want a loving connection between yourself and son, this is my advice. If you feel so down, ask him for a hug. You will be surprise how those little arms will calm your soul. Always say the word I love you with him. This is I and my children’s mantra. Going out, going to school, about to leave his room, always rub his head and look into his eyes while saying those words. With time, those words will heal your souls.
See him as the reason you breathe, you live and assume the father is dead. This is because if truly he’s dead, won’t you take care of that angel. Tonight, go to him, hug him and say “Mummy is so sorry for hurting you.”. Don’t be afraid to cry, Sis. Don’t wake up tired. Keep pushing and I feel and know that God will surely bless you soon and turn those tears to laughters. Please be strong. Please. For Samuel and for yourself. Please.
This made me so emotional, I’m glad you brought this up because you want things to be different. Channel all your energy into loving Samuel as best you can, talk to him lovingly aso he changes his mindset towards you- it’s so disheartening hearing a child ask if he will be punished for something he hasn’t even done. Life is hard most times but never take your frustration out on him ❤️
No hard feelings but you are selfish, after choosing to give birth with an irresponsible man you then decide to take it out on a three year old boy. What you are doing to him will cause him to be traumatised and lose his self esteem later in life.To me you don’t deserve to be a mother. If truly he asking you such questions has not made you stop putting him through pain simply because you are in pain then please you need to go to the hospital to get checked mentally and emotionally so they know what exactly is wrong with you and the right form of treatment you need.He didn’t choose his father you did,he didn’t choose to be born by you!you did giving the numerous protective measures including contraception and total abstinence or the use of condoms you still choose to have unprotected sex.MAY GOD FORGIVE YOU.WHATEVER YOU ARE DOING TO THAT CHILD YOU WILL ANSWER BEFORE GOD.HOWEVER HE TURNS OUT TO BE IN THE FUTURE DUE TO THE TRAUMA YOU ARE SUBDUING HIM TO IN HIS CHILDHOOD YOU WILL ACCOUNT FOR IT BEFORE GOD JUST A WORD OF CAUTION
I cried even before I finished reading it. This is my story. I’m also going via the same. It’s hard.
Very hard and I feel your pains.
Let me share with you what I do that help most of the time.
1. Pray for strength and God’s guidance to raise him
2. Someone said u should constantly hug and tell him you love him. That works. It softens your heart towards the kid .
3. This one works for me but I don’t know how you will take it. I hardly communicate with his dad. I assume he doesn’t exist. I stopped fighting him over child care though it was hard. The more I fight him, the more I get angry and this extends to my kid. If he sends sth, fine, if he doesn’t, no problem.
Social welfare won’t help so I live as if he doesn’t exist.
I’m getting there by and by. I know you will too.
May God strengthen you.
Hmmm Mummy Samuel I don’t how to feel right now concerning your towards your own son. Please I am begging stop with everything in you if only you don’t want to loose your son. My late father did the same to me and my immediate sister after me. I was mostly hurt because sister knows how to run. I was beaten up with wire, belt, stamped several times in the neck, strangled in the neck, dragged on the ground, locked up in a for continuous punishment, shoved into a pill, pushed where one of boobs hit a nail as a teenager now I am aching from pains in that breast, hit in the head with belt hook, my father never believed me when I told him I’ve done no wrong. It got a point I would rather run a way with my bag with clothes to go and sleep in the farm of which I ended up walking all the way from akyem aperade to old just get away from him because he’s coming for a visit and sometimes I have to leave to go and sleep in a lotto kiosk because I don’t want to see him for him to beat me up. A girl about 10 – 12 years traumatized. Hmm darling if he were to be alive I would have never ever forgive him or have anything to do with him unless because of that I am very protective of my self and siblings. Trust me you don’t want your son to hate. You’re a Great harm. I really crying and shaking whilst typing this. Please mummy stop okay 😭🙏🏻
Certainly, you’re visiting the ‘sins of the father’ on the innocent boy and that is not good enough. You’ve abused the little boy to such extreme and it ought to cease immediately.
You need to go for therapy immediately so you can heal. Learn to accept that the boy’s father will not come through for you and you will have to bear the financial responsibility all by yourself.
Every morning or evening when you’re about bathing him, offer an apology to him and tell him you regretted beating him. Offer this apology continuously for a couple of weeks and once the act of having to apology lingers in your mind, you’ll begin to think twice anytime the feel like beating him.
I’m so teary reading this. Please stop in the name of God. Your son is an innocent boy. Pray to God to help you. As for your anger, you can join alpha hour midnight prayers. God will turn your life around. He can change people. Your son deserves all of your love.
