My boyfriend is unemployed. He has a BSc in Economics and Business and got a certificate from a teacher training college.

He was very well employed, but he resigned because, according to him, there was a lot of work to do, yet when it was time to pay salaries, the manager and accountant would be absent from the office for days and return later with a lot of complaints.

We are in a long-distance relationship. School went on vacation, so I returned back home to Monrovia for the break. Since we found each other and started talking early this year, it was the first time I was going to see him in person and talk to him face-to-face. I sponsored the entire visit to his house by myself.

When I arrived, all he did was lament about his state of life.

“See me, I am not happy at all. Whatever I touch just turns into sand. Life is not good for me. Look at my friends, they are doing better than me.”

Then he would pull out a photo and tell me they sat in class together, but look at them and look at him. He nearly tore my ears off with his incessant pessimism, but I did well and encouraged him as much as I could.

He could not offer me anything substantial while I was at his house. His reason was that he did not earn any money and did not even have the capacity to eat three meals a day.

My dad has a school in another city, so I decided to convince my father to give him a place at the school to teach. He has gone to teacher training and also has a BSc in Economics. I thought he would be best suited to teach Business or Mathematics at the school. My dad agreed and had him send in his application so he could be given a chance.

The problem is that he wants me to have his child.

I am a student. I just got into tertiary school last year. He was talking about how the pregnancy would mean that we would be bonded at the hip forever and nothing would ever separate us.

No, I did not agree. I just managed to sway the conversation away.

We spoke upon my return home, and he found a sly way to bring up the conversation I managed to avoid. He wants to get me pregnant for him so I could take the pregnancy along with me to the university.

“Is it a prize for you or what?Go and look for someone to have a child with if you think you are growing old. How would you take care of a child if you are unable to take care of yourself now? Who do you expect to continue to cater for me and the pregnancy?” I asked.

He responded, “That is the part we are supposed to trust God to cater for us.”

I asked him if he had the resources to look after a family. “You are here and there looking for any amount of money to get food on your table. How do you expect to raise a family?”

Again, he interpreted my question as me looking down on him. “You are looking down on me because I don’t have money.”

Tempers were high, and I gave it to him well enough. That evening, I am certain he did not sleep well at all.

The next day, there was no text or call. The next day too. It lasted for a whole week.

Just last week, he called and said it was just a test of love and that it was not anything serious, so I should not use it against him.

“I was just trying to test you and be sure you love me well,” he said. He said he had the answers he had been searching for.

For a person who has studied Economics, you would think he knows better. He should understand the power and importance of money well enough. You don’t just pick up my money from the floor. It is not easy to come by money. So why talk about simply depending on God?

Maybe that is exactly where he is in life. He is waiting for manna from heaven to come for his sake.

I don’t even know how I entered this mess. I have warned him to stay as far away from me as possible.

This kind of man will grow up only to be a terrible elder who dishes out mundane advice when given the chance.
