When my boyfriend and I were getting to know each other, he was quite open with me about his life. I was impressed by how easily and freely he narrated his experiences to me. I told myself, “A man who talks, nice.” Little did I know that a time would come when I would wish he had kept his mouth shut.

If you ask me, a quiet man is better than a liar. Tell me why this man told me he was 35 years old when he wasn’t. Even when he mentioned that age, I felt he was much older than me but I decided I could manage it. Then I found out he is actually 45. He took a whole ten years off his age. What level of deception is this?

After I discovered his age, the trust I had for him shattered. I started questioning everything that came out of his mouth. My mind kept wandering to everything he told me about himself.

“Were they all lies too?”

The answer is Yes!

This is what I found when I went digging.

He said he completed Pope John’s in 2008. Lies. He actually attended Ghana Secondary School and completed in 1998. I wasn’t even born then.

He also said he went to the University of Ghana right after secondary school. Another lie. He failed his SSSCE and had to resit the exams. From there, he enrolled in the Teacher Training College, and later did a top-up at Accra Polytechnic.

He claimed he had never been married. “My ex left me for another man while we were preparing for marriage,” he said.

Well, I found a marriage Bible and ladies’ stuff in his room. I don’t know for sure if they belong to the said ex but I suspect he was married to the owner of the belongings.

I confronted him about my findings and told him I was disappointed in him. I thought he would feel bad and apologise for his lies. To my surprise, he got defensive and told me he didn’t cause me any harm by lying. He, rather said that I insulted him when I told him I was disappointed in him. Why do some men lie thinking they’re outsmarting women? It’s so pathetic.
