I read Dawson’s story about living in a haunted house and felt inspired to share my own experience relating to the spirit world somewhere in 2020. I know most people don’t believe in the supernatural or the spiritual realm unless they have had an encounter with such. Although I am a devout Muslim, I was one of those non-believers. Don’t get me wrong, I have always believed in the Allah I serve, and the afterlife. However, I was so grounded in my faith that I didn’t believe any evil would touch me or come across my path. Until it happened.

My story is not about a ghost. It’s about my near-death experience the night after I went to Accra Central to get some stuff. I was with a friend that day. We had to wait for a while to get the stuff. So by the time I got home, it was late. I was also very exhausted. All I wanted to do was to take my bath and sleep.

I finally dragged myself to the bathroom around 8 PM. When I finished, I came to lie down and stayed on my phone for a while. I was already tired so I didn’t take long before I started nodding off. I knew if the lights were on, I wouldn’t have a good night’s sleep. It pained me to get out of bed but I had to.

After I switched off the lights and got back to my bed, I didn’t get to close my eyes before I felt a hand close around my throat. I reached for the hand but I touched nothing. I recited a dua for situations like this while I struggled to free myself from whatever was holding me. I was sure that I had the strength to overcome it but this thing was stronger. And heavier too. As if someone lifted a house and put it on top of me.

I tried so many times to push it off me but nothing worked. This thing was strangling me to my death yet I couldn’t fight it. I couldn’t breathe but I refused to give up. I kept struggling with it for what I perceived to be ten minutes. When it stopped, I quickly ran to the switch to turn the lights on. I saw no one in my room. Just then, A gust of wind blew past our main gate.

Honestly, I thought my exhaustion had gotten to me and I hallucinated everything. Or I was sure that if there was something, it left with the wind. Well, it turned out the thing was waiting for me in my room. As soon as the lights went off, it pounced on me. This time, more vicious than before. I knew that it was trying to kill me. I am sure that if not for prayers, I would have expired that night.

For the next two weeks, this thing haunted me. I couldn’t sleep. My parents spoke to a few people and they were directed to take me to see a spiritualist up north. When we got there the man asked me, “Who have you offended?” I am usually a peaceful person. I thought hard and deeply but I couldn’t recall having an altercation with someone or even wronging anyone.

When I told the man that I didn’t wrong anyone, he didn’t accept it. He said someone was angry with me. He made some incantations and then asked, “Do you remember an encounter with a ‘pure’ water seller?” The only person I remember buying sachet water from before everything started was a young woman I met at Accra Central.

That day while I waited with my friend for the items, I got thirsty. By then we were standing on the balcony of a building. I saw a “pure” water seller pasing by and called her to buy one. She was downstairs. While she was climbing up she complained, “Is it because of only one water you want to buy that you are making me climb these flight of stairs?”

i kept quiet but my friend is the type who likes to make jokes out of every situaution. He told the lady, “Don’t mind this guy. The next time he does this to you, slap him.” I laughed and also joked, “If she dares lay a finger on me, I will retaliate.” We all laughed except this water seller. She was quiet the entire time the transaction took place.

When I recounted the events of that day to the spiritualist, he confirmed that that lady was the one behind all the attacks I was facing. I couldn’t believe a stranger I was just playing with would come after my life so agrressively. It was then I knew I f**ked up and nearly caused my own death. If I hadn’t called her, or threatened to hit her should she hit me first, maybe I wouldn’t have triggered that chain of reaction.

After I was delivered from whatever was haunting me, I stopped buying water and food from the streets. I have also ceased to take things of spiritual nature for granted. You would be dealing with someone thinking they are just as human and physical as you but rub them off wrongly and find out what hidden dakness they carry.
