I met him during my University days in 2021. He came to check our faulty prepaid meter in the hostel I was living in. When he was leaving, he left me his number and a smile on his face.

He was the first man who gave me money without me having to ask for it. Even as he gave me money, he didn’t demand sex like most men did. He gave me money for the road, just because. Fifty cedis every now and then. He drummed the topic of marriage into my head too. He said I was going to be his first and only bride.

Our relationship was devoid of problems until we began having sex in 2022. I went visiting him at his house and it happened there. I was taken care of well afterwards, but days after the act, it was as if someone who had been watching our relationship flourish decided to open cans of worms into it.

I don’t know if it was a him problem or I was just the one with the problems, but all I know is that I really got fed up with his behaviour. So, I stopped visiting him. He liked me to visit, so I reduced the times I went. On the days I decided to visit him, he would ask me if we were going to be intimate. If not, then I should not come because what was I going to come and do?

And he stopped giving me money occasionally too. Now, he only gave me money when I was coming to visit him.

We would exchange words, insult each other and argue. The only times we stopped arguing for a while were after sex. It was like a magic wand in our relationship, and I think because of that, we started getting addicted to it. We were removing our clothes any time of the day, as long as I was at his end.

I was enjoying it before, but it became more exhausting and started snatching parts and parts of me. Guilt was eating me up because we were not even married.

I left him because of this.

Five months after we broke up, he lured me into coming to visit him by lying that he was sick and needed help. We broke up, yes, but I didn’t hate him, so I went to him. Sex happened when I got there.

I was angry with myself and got even angrier weeks later when I learnt I was pregnant.

He accused me of trying to pin him down, saying all sorts of things. He asked why I didn’t take contraceptives afterwards when I was not a child.

My aunty didn’t let me keep it. I too didn’t allow myself to keep it. Looking at his financial standing and how he didn’t look like he was going to be ready to take care of it, I just decided the best thing to do was let the baby go. I told my aunty, and we went to the hospital.

Today, I regret it. I regret that I took the baby out because I saw him some weeks ago, and boy, does he look good. Life has turned out good for him. He smelled nice and looked amazing too.

He said we should try again, now that we have matured and are in a better position mentally. And I wish I could, but since him, I have moved on with two other men.

The first one happened because I was lonely and needed to get off the urge. The second one, I went out of my way to propose to him. At least, he gives me breadcrumbs of attention, and it’s better than nothing.

We have casual sex once in a while. His girlfriend will not give it to him. As for me, well, I will, so I give it to him when he needs me.

No one has proposed to me ever since Dan and I separated. My salt tastes tasteless. My peace is shaken. I don’t feel beautiful anymore.

If I had kept the baby, I would have had a reason to go back, but I terminated the baby. I think we need not waste our time. We have to go our separate ways.

Yet, if I have a chance with love again, I would take it slowly and ask questions.

Akwasi, wherever you are, I really miss you.

I loved you the way you deserved. You loved me without a condition, yet I was blind and doubted you. I might never find someone who loves me like you did. But I hope the next woman loves you the way I failed to.

As for me, I have become a saltless woman feeding on people’s hard-earned men.
