I was transferred to Accra to work not long ago, and the most horrifying story of my life so far in Accra was getting a place to rent in Accra. I had to use all my savings to rent this place I’m living in. The landlord is a woman. She welcomed me here very nicely and did her best to make me feel like I’m in my own home.

She has a daughter, Jenny, who immediately became my friend, especially when she got to know I was new in Accra. Jenny would cook and bring me some. Even when her mother cooked, she found a way of sneaking some of the food to me. I was grateful for her friendship until it started getting intense.

She took me out one evening and introduced me to her friends as her boyfriend. She later told me she didn’t want them to be all over me. That night, when we came back home, she stayed in my room till very late. I didn’t know how to tell her to leave even when I was feeling sleepy. She said, “You can sleep if you want. I just want to finish this movie.”

I could see the signs of a hot iron, so I picked up my hammer and struck the iron while it was hot. She ended up spending the night with me.

The very next morning, when I met her mom in the corridor and greeted her, she told me, “I hope you’ll marry my daughter now that you’ve started sharing your room with her.”

I was shocked. I was wondering how she got to know about it so soon. I asked Jenny, and she said, “I told her. I told her this morning that I spent the night with you. Don’t worry, she knows everything.”

My name in this house has changed from Isaac to Asiw. Meanwhile, I haven’t proposed to her and have no intention of dating her. I only struck because the iron was hot. I have a girlfriend I’ve dated for years before relocating to Accra. I thought it was all fun, but it looks like I’m in deep trouble.

What will I tell them when my girlfriend comes to visit? How can she be my wife when I haven’t proposed? My only option is to rent a new place, but with what money?

Now I don’t have peace in this house. While she’s calling me babe, her mom will be calling me Asiw. Her mom treats me like her own husband, cooking for me and serving me. I think when my rent expires, I won’t pay rent, but I don’t like her. She’s not the kind of woman I would want to spend the rest of my life with. Do I tell her the truth now, or do I just wait for the story to unfold by itself?
