My phone had been giving me problems for close to a year. It would freeze in the middle of a call, and I would have to restart it before it could work again for a while. Sometimes, the network bars would disappear for several hours. No matter how many times I restarted the phone, the bars wouldn’t appear. Minutes or even hours later, they would suddenly come back.

Everyone around me complained about calling me and not being able to reach me. My office colleagues would say, “As for Sabina, you would have to pour libation to the gods before your calls get through to her.”

It was funny, but it was also embarrassing to have your colleagues say that about you because of your phone.

I begged my husband to buy me one. I didn’t even ask for much. I told him any phone he could afford would be fine.

He asked, “What are you doing with your salary that you can’t buy a phone?”

He knew exactly what I did with my salary, and he also knew I was the kind of woman who lived on a shoestring budget every day simply because I didn’t have much. I took his advice and started saving money to buy a phone.

Then a colleague at work surprised me with a phone after he traveled to Dubai and returned. You can imagine how happy I was. I didn’t know whether to lie prostrate and thank him or sing his praises.

I got home and was putting my SIM card into it when my husband saw it.

“Oh, so you have enough money to buy a phone like this, yet you’re always crying about being poor?”

I responded, “There are kind people in this world. One of them gave me this phone.”

“Who?”

“A colleague at work.”

“A man, I guess.”

“That doesn’t matter.”

“Great. If by this time tomorrow I still see this phone in your hand, you’ll explain to me what you gave him in return for him to buy you a phone.”

I still have the phone, and he’s still angry. He says he will come to my office to confront whoever gave me the phone.

I told him he should do his worst.

He has told his mom about it. His brother now believes a man I’m sleeping with bought me a phone. The birds in the sky know, and even the ants in our kitchen know.

I don’t know how far he wants to take this, but no matter what happens, I’m not returning the phone.
