This guy proposed to me, and I immediately knew he wasn’t single, but I liked him enough to investigate and see if my feelings about him were true.

The first time he took me to his house, he gave me a bottle of Coke and biscuits. The next time I went to his house, I checked his fridge for water and saw all manner of dishes in it. I asked him, “Did you cook all that by yourself?” He responded gleefully, “Oh yeah, I cooked them during the weekend.”

The okro stew was so good I took some home. I asked if he was raised in an Ewe home, and he brushed my question aside jokingly. I asked him to call me anytime he was going to cook, but he never did. I would go there and find the dishes waiting. I would eat and carry some home.

I was sleeping in his bed when I found a lady’s hair bonnet under the second pillow. I smelled it, and it had the fresh scent of hair cream. I knew the lady had been there. I didn’t ask him any questions.

In his head, he’s building a relationship with me, but he doesn’t know I visit him because of the good meals in his fridge. I even tell him the kind of dishes I want, and by the time I visit, they’re in his fridge.

Now I’m trying so hard not to let this lady catch me. If she catches me and walks away from the relationship, my heart will break too. But sometimes I want to find her and become her friend so I can learn her way of cooking. She’s such a good cook that she’s the reason I’m still seeing her boyfriend.

But I promise this: I won’t sleep with him, no matter what. I’m keeping that space for her. She’s a good woman and doesn’t deserve to share her boyfriend with someone like me, who would pick food over true love.
