Out of nowhere, right in the middle of our conversation, he confessed his undying love for me.
I wasn’t expecting that. After the initial shock wore off, I smiled and asked him a question I thought every woman deserves an answer to.
“Why do you love me? What was it about me that made you fall for me?”

I wasn’t fishing for compliments, neither was I expecting a poem. I only wanted to know what he saw in me. Maybe he’d say I make him feel at peace. Maybe he’d mention my character, my heart, or the little things I do.
Instead, he smiled and said, “It’s because your work.”
“My work?” I asked. I am a nurse.
“Yes, as a nurse, you’ll take very good care of me and our children. Caring for people is what you do every day, so it’ll be easy for you to do the same at home.”
Out of all the things that make me who I am, the first thing he could think of was my profession.
So I asked him the question that had already started forming in my mind.
“If I wasn’t a nurse, would you still love me?”
He didn’t really answer the question. Instead, he said he’d dated women from different professions before, but he’d realised nurses were the kind of women he preferred. He said he was attracted to the profession because nurses naturally make caring wives and mothers.
Ever since that conversation, I haven’t stopped thinking about it.
Shouldn’t someone fall in love with you because of who you are before what you do?
Or am I overthinking it?
