Right after my national service, life decided to test me. Things were so bad that I used to roam the whole of Accra in search of a job but I got nothing. I became so frustrated that I had to be fighting with receptionists when I follow up to check on my application letters and they tell me, “Sorry, I haven’t submitted your documents yet. It is still with me.” This was something that happened quite often so you can imagine the number of times I have gotten into a fight about this.
I remember how I nearly came to blows with a security guy one hot sunny afternoon. He said there was no vacancy at the organization he was guarding so he wouldn’t allow me to submit my application documents. The exchange that happened that day was actually my breaking point.
When I got home, I did some serious thinking and decided that I would no longer continue on the job hunt. I rather chose to focus my attention on getting an internship instead. Yes, the money wouldn’t be much but it would be better than nothing. So I embarked on an internship search.
Fortunately, I met a gentleman who offered to pay me GHC559 for an internship. He didn’t expect much from me. All he said was, “The position is yours if only you are interested.”After spending so much time in the desert, this drop of water felt like an ocean. So I gladly accepted his offer. I didn’t mind that the company was in a remote village far away from Accra.
When I started working, I met this lady on LinkedIn. We connected beyond the professional community and started talking about our personal lives. She was so easy to talk to. I even felt there was a spark between us. I got so comfortable around her that I told her everything about myself. One day we were talking when I mentioned the job I was doing and the amount I earned.
I realized that she started pulling away from me after that conversation. She didn’t make it obvious but I knew it had to do with the money I was earning at the end of the month. She didn’t want to have anything to do with a broke guy like me. Her sudden change in behavior hurt my feelings but I patiently stuck around hoping to get her attention.
I would text Eno and she wouldn’t reply to my messages untill four days have passed. Even when she replied, she would be so rude to me that I would decide not to text her again. But after a few days, I would start missing her and end up texting her. Things continued like this until I gathered courage one day and stopped texting her entirely.
Fortunately, I got a stable job four months into the internship. This job was the miracle I had been believing God for. The salary was very good. And the benefits were amazing. In fact, my life was turned around overnight because of this. While I sang praises to God and enjoyed my blessings, I thought about the lady who rejected me because I was broke.
I don’t know what happened but I felt it was time to reach out to that lady and update her on my progress. I sent her a simple message that read; “Hi, I haven’t heard from you in a while. I hope you’ve been keeping well. I just want you to know that I have a good job now. It has turned things around for me financially.” Then I quoted my salary and asked that we hang out soon.
It was a silly thing to do, I know. However, I was testing a theory. I just wanted to know if indeed, she ghosted me because I earned GHC559 at the end of the month. Or if she just wasn’t interested in me. I honestly hoped it was the latter. So I expected her to insult me or even block me for giving her all this unsolicited information about my finances. But that didn’t happen.
As soon as Eno saw my messages, she started chatting with me nicely. Before I knew it, she was sending me good morning messages and updating me on her daily activities. Then she would send me good night messages. I was so surprised that she could change completely.
It didn’t take long before she started demanding gifts from me. This just confirmed my theory. She actually ghosted me because I was broke. And now that I was doing well, I was worthy of being in her life. I never gave her anything. She would ask me for something, and I would give her an excuse and promise to give it to her another time. She was determined to get something out of me so she continued to play nice.
One day I was there when she texted me, “My dear rich friend, take me somewhere for dinner this weekend.” When I saw her message I laughed and responded, “Where do you want to go?” She said anywhere nice was fine with her. So I told her, “Just choose a place and I will show up.” She called that she found a fancy restaurant she would like us to go to. I asked her to call me when she gets there and hung up.
Why Men Don’t Say “I Love You” To Each Other
I received a call from her when she arrived at the restaurant. I told her, “That’s good. Get a table and look through the menu, I will be there soon. You can even take some photos for your Instagram. I will see you soon.” Three hours later, I was still sitting in my room laughing at her greed. She texted me throughout this period and I told her I was stuck in traffic but I would be there soon.
However, after three hours she sent me an angry text message. “Do you have any idea how embarrassing it is for me to sit here and wait for you all these hours? People have been staring at me because I am sitting here alone with no food or drink. I thought you were different but you are just like the rest of them. You are a poor broke man.” I kept laughing as I responded, “Eno Fowa the gold digger, I have seen you now. You should thank God I didn’t ask you to order anything expensive. Stay safe, my dear, and have a nice life.” That was the last I heard from her. I know what I did may come across as petty but I hope I made the brotherhood proud.
