I was surprised when I woke up this morning and saw that my story was published. I sent in the story over a year ago so a lot has changed since then. I read the comments and smiled at the people who encouraged me to keep calling and texting Esther. For the ones who asked me to let her go, I want you to know that I appreciate your opinions. I just want you all to know how things have progressed to this point.
Four months after I met Esther I never gave up on trying to prove to her that I wanted to be with her. She ignored me most of the time but every once in a while I sent her a text. Sometimes she would respond but other times she wouldn’t. We kept communicating like that until I went to the States to pursue a short course. I didn’t mention to her that I was out of the country, and since our conversations were mostly on WhatsApp, she couldn’t figure it out either.
One day I was sleeping when I heard my phone ringing. I woke up and looked at the screen. It was Esther. The joy I felt that very moment is unexplainable. I almost did not answer because of the way my heart raced at the thought that she called me. When I said “Hello,” she responded, “I have been trying to reach you for some days now but your line is not going through.” Could I be any happier? I answered, “Aww, sorry dear. This number is only for my WhatsApp. I used to call you with my MTN number but I am sure you didn’t save it.”
After we got the pleasantries out of the way she started talking about the reason she had been distant. I didn’t ask her any questions. She just went on, “I am sorry for ignoring you all this while. I was in a relationship when we met. The guy was acting up but we hadn’t broken up. And I did not want to give you any ideas while I was still committed to someone else.” “It’s okay. You don’t owe me any explanations,” I said. “No, I do. You are a handsome guy and I know most women would list you as their type. I am even sure you’ve met another woman already. Women always chase men like you.” I laughed when she said that. She on the other hand was very quiet so I knew she was serious.
I stopped laughing and took a deep breath. Her voice filled the silence, “I am right, aren’t I? You are taken.” I told her that I am a patient man. I had hoped she would come around so I don’t have eyes for any other woman. She didn’t believe me. All she kept saying was, “I talked to my friend about you and she agreed that someone like you is quite the catch. So how come you haven’t met someone?” I laughed again, and this time, she laughed too.
I knew where the conversation was headed. And in as much as it interested me, I had to be sure that she truly wanted me. So I told her I would call her back. After I hung up I sat down for some time and thought about everything she told me. I wondered if she only wanted me because I was available to her or if she genuinely likes me. I felt the only way I could find out was to ignore her for a while.
I didn’t call her back like I said I would. After five hours she texted me, “I thought you said you would call me back.” I saw the message but I did not respond to it. The next day she called me on a video call. I answered, and she looked as beautiful as she did the day I saw her. All I could do was smile at her. “You didn’t call me back,” she pouted. I watched her for a while and asked, “Are you sure that guy is out of your life?” “Yes, he is. That’s how I am. When I am dating you, I will focus on only you but if you mess up we are done. That’s why I couldn’t entertain you.” I believed her because of the way she treated me when I tried to show interest in her.
That day we talked at length, and for the first time since we met, our conversation was not boring. From that time I would wake up to see her good morning messages. Things were going well. Then she asked me to call her on a normal call. I told her I couldn’t do a regular phone call so we should just stick to WhatsApp calls. She jokingly asked, “Why, are you at a military base?” I laughed but said nothing about my location. She then asked, “When will you visit me in school? I will be completing soon so now is the right to come around.” I was so happy that the girl I liked was so enthusiastic about seeing me.
During our conversations, she mentioned that she wouldn’t be able to see me when she goes home. She said she comes from a very strict home. I could tell there was more to what she was telling me so I pushed her for more information. That was when she opened up about her background to me. Her parents are in the village. A teacher who taught her when she was a child brought her to Kumasi to live with her and her family when she was nine. They took care of her till she grew up and continued to take care of her in nursing school. I was so impressed by her achievements after I learned about her roots.
She explained, “You are the third guy I am dating. I never took the other two home but there is something about you that gives me the urge to introduce you to my family. I just hope you are not here to hit and run.” I assured her that my intentions are honorable. As we continued to speak, I noticed that she is humble and respectful. How could I not fall madly in love with her?
The flow of our conversations was excellent until I called her with my USA number. When she heard my voice she said, “Eddie, where from this number?” It was then I told her I was out of town. She was a little upset that I didn’t mention it in the entire two months that we started dating that I was out of the country. I tried to explain to her that I would be home soon but she was not feeling good at that moment. After we finished talking she sent me a text, “I am happy for you. I hope we get to meet one day.”
I knew she was worried but I did not address her fears. We just continued to talk as though nothing had changed. As a show of my love for her, I sent her money. She was not happy about it, “Why didn’t you ask me first before you sent me the money?” She said she was okay, and that she did not need money. I felt bad but I understood her. I was not trying to show off or anything. I just felt she would need the money to do a little shopping. But it turned out she did not want my money.

When I was about to come to Ghana I told her, “I bought kente from a vendor. Can you pick it up and send it to me? My friend will pick you up and take you to the airport.” I had never asked her for a favor so she agreed to do it. I then asked my brother to pick her up and bring her to meet me at the airport. According to my brother, she asked him, “Why are we at arrival when we should be at departure?” He had to give her an explanation to sell our plan.
She was standing next to my brother looking bored when I made my way toward them. Her reaction to seeing me was gold. You would think she had seen a ghost. When it dawned on her that I was actually standing before her, she became shy. She could not even look me in the face. I opened my arms for a hug and she run into it. I felt so much love coming from her. The next thing I realized she was crying. “Hey, why are you crying?” “These are happy tears,” she said, “I was so sure that you would never return.” “Well, I am here and I am not letting you go.” We went to sit somewhere and talked over drinks. It was so amazing to finally be with her.

Things have been good for us ever since she called me that fateful day. There is nothing like privacy between us. I didn’t even have a password on my phone until she encouraged me to put a lock on it. Now, we both have the passwords to each other’s phones. When she found out about my job she said, “The fact that you have a regular job and still drive Bolt tells me how hard-working you are. I respect you.” Every time I hold her in my arms I thank Bolt for bringing a generous, kind, and respectful woman like her my way.
After we got to know each other better, I went with my sister to see her mother and now the woman and I are best friends. After meeting her mother we went to see my family as well. My dad is late so it was just my mother and my uncle who met her. Right now, we are putting things in place to get married. I count myself as the luckiest man on earth to have a woman who is beautiful inside and out. She has a golden heart, and I cannot wait to call her my wife.
