In school, I went out for Valentine’s Day with the first guy who proposed to me on campus. I was still thinking about his proposal so he used Val’s day as an opportunity to impress me. I wanted to impress him too by looking beautiful for the night.

I borrowed my roommate’s pair of heels because the colour matched the dress I wanted to wear. At exactly 8pm, this guy came to knock on the door and we stepped out. A meter away from the hostel, we got into a taxi and went to the restaurant.

We had enough to eat and drink. The conversation was also good. I had the time to see him for who he was; handsome and a gentleman, I thought.

After the night, we took a taxi that was going to campus. He didn’t pay for dropping so other passengers joined. When we got to the last stop, we got down. I thought we were going to get another taxi to campus but he said, “It’s not far from here so let’s walk. I don’t want to see you go this early so walking will give us more time to talk.”

I was dangling on borrowed four-inch heels while this guy walked comfortably next to me. Before I could say jack, the heel snapped under my feet and I came tumbling down. He could have held me or caught me while I was falling but he didn’t. While on the floor, he didn’t pick me up immediately, he stood there laughing while passersby were doing, “Ow Ow Ow.” I even stretched up my hand but he didn’t take it. I was down for several seconds trying to get up on my own.

When I got up, I removed the heel from my feet and continued walking. He was still laughing and asking if I was OK. I kept walking. He followed. A taxi came by and I jumped into it. He joined. He was still laughing. I didn’t say a word. When I got to my hostel and was getting down, he asked me, “Oh, are you angry?” I didn’t say a word. I got down and entered the room and that was where I started crying.

He sent me a text; “Why are you angry? I was only playing with you.” I answered, “I’m done playing with you. Good night.”

I blocked his number and the next day when he saw me and tried to approach, I lifted a finger and told him, “Stay there. Don’t come close. If what you saw last night was funny, then I don’t know what else you’ll find funny. Stay out of my way.”

That was the end of us but that story didn’t end until I bought a new pair of heels to replace what I broke. My roommate never forgave me for spoiling her favourite shoes. I had to buy it before she left me alone. The relationship between us was never the same again all because of a Valentine’s Day outing.
