This is one funny experience I had with the first guy who ever took me to meet his parents.

I was young, twenty-three or twenty-four but he was eager to introduce me to his parents because he thought I was “the one.” So one morning, we got in a car from Kumasi to Sefwi to meet them.

They were happy to see me. His mom called me beautiful and young. His dad said, “Eii, my son, you know market!” and we all laughed. His sisters were there too, calling me “Our in-law.”

The next morning, when I woke up, they were all seated in the hall watching TV. I greeted them, went to the bathroom to brush my teeth, and returned to the room. Unbeknownst to me, they were waiting for me to wake up and sweep or do something in the house. I went back and told my boyfriend I was hungry. He went out and took forever to return.

When he finally came back, he didn’t mention food. But since I was still hungry, I went out again, walked through the gate, and bought some waakye. I called to ask if he wanted some, and he snapped, “You’re only thinking about your stomach?”

I replied, “Oh, will they eat too? My money can’t buy for everyone ooo!”

I came back, walked past them in the hall while they watched, and went inside to eat my waakye. Later, while I was sleeping, my boyfriend told me his mom wanted to talk to me. I went to see her, and she said, “Oh, staying inside like this isn’t healthy. Come and sit outside with us.”

So I sat there, watching them go up and down. The sisters were busy cooking, moving around, while I just sat there. Eventually, I got tired and went back to sleep.

They called my boyfriend to come for the food, and I overheard his sister say, “Ah, your wife can’t see we’re busy? She won’t even come and help?”

After they ate, I washed the dishes and went back to sleep.

The next morning, I went to the kitchen where the two sisters were cooking. I asked if I could help, but they said they were almost done. When they finished, they didn’t serve me. My boyfriend went in to eat and left me in the room. I didn’t eat until later that day when we were about to leave.

They had plantain trees all over the house, with many ripe ones. So before leaving, I asked his father, “Can you cut one plantain for me to take home?”

The look he gave me told me my relationship wouldn’t last till sunset and truly, it didn’t.

We fought at the station and fought all the way home. He was furious, asking why I went to my future in-laws’ house and acted like a princess. I was confused. “What did you expect me to do?”

He said, “Act like a good wife! Let them know I brought home wife material!”

By the time we got back, we were still arguing. Finally, I asked, “So what’s the way forward?”

He said, “They will decide, not me.”

And they decided against me, wai. My beauty took me there, but my character brought me back.

I Was Fine Until I Was Alone In My Room

Funny enough, the man I eventually married didn’t stress me like this. When we visit his parents, his mom treats me like a princess—she cooks and even serves me. She won’t let me touch anything! And when we’re leaving, she packs food and other things for us to take home.
