She said she was joking. To be honest, I was also joking.

She made the post late in the evening but I saw it early morning on the 12th of February, 2021. I knew her distantly on Facebook. I remember reacting to a couple of her photos, that was it. But that morning when I saw her post, I decided to comment, regardless of the many comments on her post.

It was a funny video she posted. In the video, a sad lady was on a sofa chewing something that looked like plantain chips while watching TV. She captioned it, “This is me on every Val’s Day while my friends are out on expensive dates or opening gift boxes.”

I commented, “If it’s a gift box you want, I can send you one but it will be an empty box.”

The response came almost immediately, “A gift box is a gift box. Please send it so I can confuse my enemies.”

She was online so I sneaked into her inbox. I told her, “Send me your location. I’ll be the delivery guy so I get to see your face.” She sent laughing emojis; “Call me when you set off. I will wait for you,” she said. I asked for her contact and she sent it. I thought she was pulling my legs. I called the number. Immediately she picked up the call, she mentioned my name, “Joseph?” I asked, “How did you know it was me?”

Something that started as a joke became serious. All night I thought of how to impress her. What gift would wow her and what else I could do to get her to take me seriously?

Sunday after church I called her, “Is there a place you’d like to go this evening? I’m coming with your Valentine’s Day box.”

We met at a small bar close to her house. She looked gorgeous, I remember, more than I perceived from her photos on Facebook. She said, “I thought we were joking, this to and fro.” I answered, “I thought it was a joke too but here we are. It’s no longer a joke.”

I gave her a small box. I asked her to open it. The note in  the box popped out first and she read it aloud, “I’m bad at picking gifts, but I hope I got this one right.”

It was a gold necklace with a tiny heart-shaped locket. She exclaimed, “Awwwnn that’s cute. Help me put it on.”

While eating and drinking, I couldn’t help but look at the necklace and how perfect it looked around her neck. The heart-shaped locket dangled joyfully around her neck as if to tell me, “This is where I belong.”

I proposed in March 2021. She said yes. In May 2023 we came home from our honeymoon with a pregnancy.

We made a bet; whoever wins chooses the name of the baby. I said the baby would arrive on Valentine’s Day evening. She said it would arrive in the morning. The baby is due in the third week of February. We both hope it arrives on the date we met, I want it to come in the evening because that was the moment I gave my heart away. The day I hung my heart around her neck.
