She was selling salt. She walked through the neighbourhood shouting, “Salt, salt, salt.” She had two kids. One was strapped to her back, and the older one, barely five years old, walked behind her as she hawked her salt. She changed from selling salt to bananas and then to watermelons. She sold everything in season.

My mom was moved by her hard work, so she brought her in and decided to give her a place to stay. Her name is Alice. Alice was thankful. Her gratitude showed in everything she did around the house. She was the first to wake up and the last to sleep. My mom is retired, and my dad passed away years ago, so apart from helping around the house, Alice also gave my mom company.

My mom sent her kids to school while thinking about what she could do for Alice in the long term. Alice even wanted to change her kids’ surname to my mom’s name. According to her, their father had been irresponsible and abandoned them right after the second one was born.

When my mom asked her if she needed help locating the man to extract child support from him, Alice retorted, “Oh, leave him. It’s God who will deal with him.”

One dawn, I thought I heard the main gate open. I looked through my window and saw someone dashing out of the house. I saw only a shadow and a foot. I stayed at my window long enough to see what would happen next. Aunt Alice went to the gate, slowly shut it, and locked it.

In the morning, I went to her room to ask questions. At first, she denied it until she later admitted it was a lady she used to live with who had gotten stranded in town, so she decided to help. I told her, “Next time, tell Mom about it. If she sees this, she won’t be happy.”

Not long after that incident, I heard a sound that felt like something heavy had fallen on the ground. Again, I opened my curtains and saw Alice in the compound. This time, I was convinced someone had come in, but instead of going through the door, the person had jumped over the wall. The sound I heard was the person landing on the ground.

Again, she denied knowing anything, making me look like a fool. That made me angry, so I decided to hunt for evidence.

One dawn, I went to her door and knocked. She came out when she heard my voice. “I want to see if you’re sleeping alone,” I told her. She started acting jittery. I went in, and lo and behold, there was a man in there.

He was the same man she had said wasn’t worth it—the father of her kids.

She said the man came to see the kids at night because he wasn’t allowed to come during the day. I love her so much, to be honest with you. She makes life easy for me around here. She cooks, cleans, and washes for my mom so I don’t have to. She would do anything you ask her to do.

I didn’t want my mom to catch her and sack her. That was why I was trying hard to find the truth. I pleaded with her to stop doing that. I threatened her in so many ways so she wouldn’t do it again.

Now she’s pregnant. The same man she said she left to God has done it again. When my mom finds out, she’ll be out the next minute. She’s pleading with me to give her money to get rid of it.

Honestly, I want to help her because that child coming will add to her problems. Plus, she’ll be out of this place. I want her here, but I can’t convince my mom to keep her here with the pregnancy. What should I do to help her and also help myself? I want her here.
