If you haven’t read the first part of this story, here’s the link. Kindly read it before starting this one.

I was on a leave one day when I had a call from a colleague in the office. He came with a gist. He said, “Have you heard the rumors?” I asked, “What rumors?” He said, “Sandy and Evans. Yesterday, the cleaner caught them kissing in the office. Now everyone is talking about it. You are in the same office with them, have you suspected them of anything?” I responded, “I can’t believe it. It can’t be true. So the cleaner is trying to say that they didn’t see him coming? He didn’t knock? He’s lying.” I knew what was at stake and wasn’t ready to stoke the fire.

When I hung up the call, I called Evans; “Bro, what am I hearing?” He asked, “What have you heard?” I told him what the colleague said. He said, “What the cleaner saw wasn’t a kiss as he’s peddling. When Sandy came to the office this morning, she dropped a peck on my cheek. That was just around the time the cleaner was walking in so he might have seen it. It wasn’t anything serious.” I told him, “Then is going around the office that you’ve been caught kissing.”

I didn’t hear about it again until I resumed work to find out that the cleaner had been sacked and Sandy had been moved from our office. It broke my heart that something of that nature could cause someone to lose his job. I asked Evans about it again and he said, “The way the news was flying around, we had to do something to save our faces so I spoke to HR about it. The cleaner was called and he accepted that he was wrong for spreading it. The next thing I knew, he had been sacked.” I told him, “Then you guys ought to be very careful because a lot of people believe what the cleaner said so they are going to keep eyes on you.”

A couple of weeks later, Evans came to the office with a worried-looking face. He told me, “Do you know that my madam has heard the rumors too? Someone here had the time to call her and gave her the news. Can you imagine?” I couldn’t imagine what he was going through so I asked him, “What is madam saying about it?” He said, “She believes it. I’ve tried my best to explain things to her but you know her stubbornness. She’s all over the place talking about investigating the issue.” I said, “Then you two should lay low for a while before things get out of hand.” He said, “It’s over between me and Sandra. There’s nothing like laying low.” I did the sign of the cross in my heart. I praised the Lord for bringing everything to an end.

I didn’t see Sandy very often. Her new office was far from us. One day, I walked into her and she cornered me. She said, “Talk to your friend. I don’t know why he’s making this small issue destroy us. He’s behaving like a woman. He doesn’t even pick  my calls often.” I told her, “But why don’t you guys just walk away from each other. Don’t you think it’s the best thing at this moment?” She said, “Eventually we will but not now.” I said in my head, “The devil doing this one is strong oo. See her, she doesn’t want to repent.”

But if you understand the kind of Marriage Evans is in, you’ll understand the reason why he was more worried. His wife is better placed than him. She earns a lot more than him and she’s the kind who doesn’t tolerate nonsense. Say she calls off the shots in their marriage and you wouldn’t be wrong. That was why Evans was scared. He knew what his wife could do.

Several months later, the office was calm. Everybody had moved on with their lives and have forgotten about the rumor. I came to the office one day and saw Sandy and Evans locked up in the office as early as 7:0am. Again, that smell was palpable. The way they looked gave them away. “I greeted and went into my corner. Sandy came around trying to play jokes with me but I didn’t give her the kind of reception she expected so she walked away quickly. I told Evans, “You guys are back together?” He gave me an answer that made me thought of how silly the two of them were. He said, “Sandy didn’t want to let things go so she requested for a proper closure.”

What I found them doing was the “proper closure”—the last supper kind of closure. Who am I to judge. I only prayed for them.

August 2nd, 2021. It was early Monday morning when I saw Evans on the phone talking harshly to someone. He didn’t even notice the time I went in. I heard him saying on the phone, “If you were a little clever, you would have known that I wasn’t the one chatting with you. Have we ever chatted at that time before? Didn’t you sense anything awkward?” Then he said again, “I guess you’re happy, right? You’ve got what you want. Clap for yourself.” I wasn’t hearing from the other person so I was only putting bits and pieces together. I said in my head, “This could only be Sandra. Chai, there’s a fire on the mountain.”

When he hung up the phone he said, “My brother I’m dead.” I asked, “What’s the issue? Who’s giving you early migraine like that?” He said, “I woke up this morning and saw a chat on my phone. A chat between me and Sandra at 1am. I didn’t remember any line of the chat because I slept throughout the night. I suspected it was my wife who did it but she also didn’t say anything. She was acting fine but the chat on my phone wasn’t mine. I had to run quickly from the house to the office so I could call Sandra and confirm from her.” I asked, “So you mean Sandy was chatting with your wife thinking it was you?” “Exactly what I’m talking about,” he responded. I said, ”I hope she didn’t drop bars?” He screamed, “She dropped hot bars. Would I have been here if she didn’t?” “Wow,” that was all I could say.

For a whole week, Evans came to work looking miserable. He didn’t look sane. He was talking to himself often. He took long breaks. He couldn’t meet deadlines. I asked, “She still hasn’t spoken about it?” He said, “Yeah she hasn’t. That’s even more worrying because I don’t know what she’s planning.” I asked, “So why don’t you broach the topic?” He said, “How do I start such a conversation? I walk to her and start talking? Nooo, I have to wait until she brings it up.” I said, “You’re the one worried so you should be the one to start the conversation.” He said, “My man, it’s not as easy as it sounds.”

August 15th, 2021 I met Sandy and Evans again in the office. Sandra looked like she had cried. Evans looked like he was exploding. Evans’ wife had called Sandra the night before to tell her that she was waiting for the perfect time to break the news to her husband. Sandra said she begged her. She explained everything to her that those messages were just a joke. Evans’s wife told her, “I will show it to your husband and see if he’ll see it as a joke too.”

The whole thing was getting scary. It’s like Evans’s wife was taking her time to kill everyone slowly. Evans took his annual leave. Two days later, Sandy also took her annual leave. I was not getting any news again. The whole thing started spreading around the company. The last time I called Evans he blamed me for spreading the news. He said, “You’re the only person we talk to. If it’s spreading then who could be spreading it?” He cut me off totally but I know who else he’s talking to and according to the other person, his wife has asked for a divorce but Evans is trying so hard to get her to rescind her decision. As for Sandra, she looks Ok. It looks like her husband isn’t giving her stress like Evans is going through. Or maybe, she’s just strong enough not to worry about such things.

Whatever the trouble they are going through, whenever I go down on my knees, I pray for them. God should be their help and rescue them, especially Evans. He looks more afflicted.
