Her mother owns the biggest supermarket in my town. I didn’t grow up in the town, but I observed her enough to know she only showed up at the shop when her mum traveled to purchase goods or when there was a need to restock the shop. Her role is mainly supervising the shop attendants.

Anytime I saw her there, I didn’t think much of it. I just focused on what I went to buy. In fact, I didn’t like her. I thought she was unfriendly and cold because she never smiled at me.
One day, I sent my friend’s younger brother to buy me a bottle of perfume from the supermarket. I would have gone to get it myself, but I was too busy at my barbering shop. When the boy came back, he brought a different perfume from what I wanted.
“Take it back and collect the one I asked you to buy,” I instructed him.
He went and came back to tell me, “Elena refused to let them change it for me.”
Elena is the lady who never smiled at me. I got upset that she turned the boy down. There is only one perfume I buy from their shop, and I wasn’t about to keep the wrong one. So I decided to go there myself.
When I got there, Elena insisted they wouldn’t take back something that had already been sold and taken out of the shop. “Even your mother knows the perfume I buy, so why are you being difficult?”
We ended up in a heated argument. The shop attendants took my side, but Elena stood her ground. I got so angry that I left the wrong perfume with her and walked away.
About an hour later, my friend whose brother I sent called me to say Elena reached out. She told him I should come for the right perfume and that she was sorry for how she handled things.
“Tell her to go to hell. I am not buying anything from that supermarket again,” I retorted.
“Bless, calm down. Elena is my very good friend. Let her right her wrong.”
I had no idea they knew each other closely like that, but I wasn’t surprised. They grew up in this same town.
After he spoke to me, I agreed to let my friend go with me so I would pick up the perfume. She apologized when she saw me. I told her, “It’s fine, don’t worry about it. I am sorry for my reaction too. It’s just that that’s the only perfume I buy here.”
“Yes, my mom confirmed that and says she’s sorry too,” she replied.
During that brief interaction, I noticed something different about her. Even though it was our first real conversation, her attitude changed my earlier impression. I became curious about her.
When we left the supermarket, I told my friend to ask for her number on my behalf. He already had it, but I wanted her to know it was me who wanted it before I would contact her.
She asked him, “Why didn’t he ask me for my number himself?”
I had no answer then—and I still don’t. But she gave him the go-ahead to give me her number. The next day, I texted her: “Hey, this is the guy who fought with you over the perfume. My name is Bless! I am told you are Elena?”
“Yes, I am,” she replied.
From there, we began texting on WhatsApp. We spent long hours on phone calls too. Through this, we built such a strong connection that it became hard to go even a moment without hearing from each other.
She’s an introvert. She rarely smiles at people she doesn’t know. She’s shy, gets socially anxious, and the smallest things can upset her. But behind all that, I discovered the most beautiful soul I’ve ever met—calm, respectful, submissive, caring, and honest. She was everything I was looking for in a woman. I fell in love with her before I could wrap my mind around her.
Months went by, and our connection only deepened. We got to know so much about each other, so I proposed to her. Unfortunately, she turned me down immediately. “I am sorry, I don’t have time for relationships right now.”
When I asked why, she said, “You won’t enjoy being in a relationship with me. I’ll just waste your time. You won’t see me anywhere except the supermarket.”
Still, I didn’t give up. I wanted to prove to her that being my girlfriend wouldn’t be a waste of time. So I kept trying for months.
One thing that kept me going was how she stayed on the phone with me till midnight. She told me everything about the guys who asked her out on dates, those who took her number at work, and even those who confessed their love to her.
One midnight, during one of our long calls, I confessed my feelings for her again. This time, she said she had someone.
That broke me.
“We barely make time for each other. I don’t call him, and he doesn’t call me. So it’s like we’re not dating, but that doesn’t also mean we’ve broken up,” she explained.
I told her, “If that’s the case, I wish you both good luck.”
She seemed disappointed. “Have you just given up already?”
“I don’t want to be in between you and your boyfriend.”
“I don’t have a boyfriend,” she finally admitted. “It was just a joke to see your reaction. But I was disappointed to see you back off immediately. I thought you’d fight for what you love.”
In the end, she said yes to me.
That moment was one of the happiest of my life. It feels beautiful to be with someone I have fallen so deeply for, knowing she loves me just as much.
I’m an introvert, and since she is too, we understand each other easily. Everything flows effortlessly between us. We’ve been dating for almost a year now, and I am a happy man because of her.
Elena is wonderful, sweet, beautiful, charming, smart, and intelligent. She’s shown me more love than I’ve ever known, and in return, I’ve given her my all. She’s been there for me in every aspect of my life. When I am with her, I feel I have what it takes to own the world.
I’ve dated several women before her, and in those relationships, I was never committed to just one person. With Elena, she’s the only one.
I Was Fine Until I Was Alone In My Room
I’m currently in school, trying to give myself better opportunities to build a good future for us. Elena is also in immigration training school. We still have a long journey ahead of us, but we continue to pray that the only thing that should ever separate us is death.
My beautiful Elena, I wish I could shout my love for you from the rooftops, but my voice is not loud enough to carry my message to the world. So here I am, on a virtual rooftop, telling the world that I love you so much.
