My wife, every evening before she goes to bed, sprays our room with saltwater and dips her feet in a bowl of highly concentrated salt water. This started not long ago, after our seven-month-old baby miraculously recovered from an illness we thought was going to kill her.

When I asked her why she does this, she said it helps her sleep better at night. I asked which doctor had prescribed it for her, and she replied that it was something they used to do when they were kids.

But here’s the situation: she performs this ritual every night and sometimes even immediately after waking up in the morning. If the nighttime routine helps her sleep, what about the morning one? Her response was, “You don’t have to understand everything, as long as it’s not hurting you.”

While it’s true that it doesn’t hurt me physically, emotionally, I’m affected. The two of us sleep in the same room. Sometimes she gets the bed wet, making me uncomfortable whenever I encounter the damp side. But to be honest, I believe there’s more to it than just helping her sleep better.

I want to know: is this a spiritual practice? And if it is, what is the salt supposed to do? The pastors here, or any spiritually inclined friends, should help me understand because while she claims she sleeps better, I don’t sleep well at all. Apart from the damp side of the bed making me uncomfortable, it also disturbs my thoughts.

I think about it all night, and it sometimes makes me dream about bad things. One night, when I tried to stop her from doing it, she waited until I was asleep and then sprayed the water around, disrupting my sleep and making it difficult for me to rest afterwards. What is the saltwater supposed to prevent or bring?
