Exactly a week ago today, my boyfriend got married. We had dated for only three months. Before we started dating I told him, “I’m not getting any younger but I’m not going to force you to marry me. I want to know your future plans and at what point a wife comes into your plan. I’m a woman. I want to marry. I want to have a man’s name at the end of mine. I want to know  your intentions and see if they fit mine.”

He responded, “Oh, it wouldn’t be too long. I can’t put a time limit to it but trust me, it would be very soon. There are rough edges to sharpen and there are few hurdles to jump. Once those are off the way, I promise we’ll get married.”

I trusted his answer so I said yes to his proposal. Three months later, A friend sent me a voice note screaming on top of her voice, “I can’t believe what I just saw. Ali is getting married. I just saw the invitation. You wait, I’ll get you a photo of it.”

I laughed when I heard her voice. She sounded so dramatic I felt it was a joke. “Ali? Getting married? And the one he will be getting married to doesn’t know?”

It took her hours before the photo came. She said, “No one was willing to send it to me but I got it.” The date on it was 2nd September 2023. Exactly a week before the wedding. I still didn’t believe it because there are thousands of people in the world called Ali and probably have his surname too.

My friend said, “Don’t leave him off the hook easily. Men continue to do that because they easily get away with it.” I asked her, “What do you suggest we do?” She answered, “Let’s lock him up.”

I still didn’t believe it was true but I told myself, “If it’s true, this guy would be dead before the wedding date.”

I arranged to see him on a Thursday. He told me he would be travelling and would be gone by Thursday. I knew it was about the wedding. My heart started beating faster. I was finally coming to the realization that it was true. I said, “How about Wednesday?” He agreed to come and see me.

Wednesday evening he was in my room. I asked him, “Are you getting married? Look at me and be truthful.”

He laughed at me, “Me? And you don’t know about it? Nooo, nothing of that sort is happening.” I showed him the invitation. From the shock on his face, I knew it was true. I texted my friend, “It’s true, bring them in.”

While he was telling me stories and begging me to forgive him and that I was the only one he truly loved, a knock was heard on the door. Two guys walked in. I told him, “You’ll miss your wedding and these two guys are here to ensure that.”
