The first time I saw him I knew I belonged with him. The pull I felt toward him was magnetic. There was nothing I could do about it than to stand somewhere and admire him. I didn’t understand why I felt so drawn to him, “What’s the meaning of this? I already have a boyfriend so why am I drawn to this man?” As fate would have it, I was working as a sales girl next to a shop he was working in as a sales boy. So as time went on, Fiifi and I became friends. I sat in his shop with him and he sat at mine with me when things were not busy. I liked to talk and he liked to listen. That’s one thing I loved about him. Soon enough, the little crush I had on him turned into something deeper. But I had a boyfriend so I kept my feelings to myself

On Valentine’s day of that year, Fiifi asked me, “Will you be my Valentine?” I laughed and told him, “Stop playing around. You know I have a boyfriend.” He answered with a question, “Yes, you’ve said that repeatedly but where is he? I have never seen you talking to him or texting him. Does he know he was your boyfriend?” I had shared almost everything with Fiifi except the problems in my relationship. But he was good at his observation skills. Truly, since I started working at the boutique, my boyfriend hadn’t called me. He was doing everything possible to avoid me. Our relationship was practically over, but no one wanted to call it off. So when Fiifi asked where he was, I was forced to confront everything I didn’t want to think about.

Later in the day, he asked me again, “Will you be my Valentine?” This time around I said yes. I suppose that’s how our relationship began. When I went home that evening, we talked on the phone for hours. He told me he had always had feelings for me and that he felt it the first time he saw me. He said it was like a magnet pull. Hearing that made me so happy because that was exactly how I felt about him. I ended up telling myself that he is the one for me. Being with Fiifi gave me the courage to end my nonexistent relationship. We were happy until I decided to go back to school the next year. He got insecure when classes began. He would say, “Because you are in school and I am not, you stopped loving and caring about me.” Things weren’t what he believed so I always tried my best to make him feel secure.

I called him whenever I was leaving for class, and we would be on the phone till I got to class and then call him right after class. Then I visited him when I had no lectures. It wasn’t a perfect arrangement but it worked for us. During one of my visits, he complained about poor internet connection, so I gave him my Vodafone SIM card to use. When he took his sim card out of his phone I inserted it into my small phone so that it wouldn’t be misplaced. We forgot to exchange SIM cards when I left his place. I was in church when my small phone started ringing. I put it on silence and only looked at the number after service. The number that repeatedly called him left a message, “Fiifi, I miss you. Please answer my calls.” After reading the text message my heart skipped a beat. Just when I was about to call her, she called again. I answered the call and talked to her. “Who are you to my boyfriend?” I asked her. “I don’t know what you mean. Fiifi is my boyfriend. We’ve been dating for two months now.” She answered.

I didn’t believe her at first but I listened to everything she had to say. It sounded true. So after the call, I called Fiifi and asked him about it. He denied everything the girl said. The next day when I went to see him, he called the girl in front of me and asked her, “Why are you going about saying you are my girlfriend? When did I propose to you?” The girl was quiet for a while before saying, “If you didn’t ask me out then it’s fine. Just remember that what goes around comes around.” This whole thing that happened kept ringing in my head, but I shut it down. I knew that Fiifi loved me so that was all that mattered. We were always on the phone. He gave me all the attention I wanted, so I found it difficult to believe that he had the time to cheat.

Fast forward to when he gained admission to school in a different region, I was disturbed because I never liked long-distance relationships. The fact that we were both now schooling made things more difficult. We struggled to talk with each other due to our conflicting schedules. When I didn’t have a class, he did. And when he didn’t have a class, I did. By the time he got to his second year, we barely even talked throughout the day. I knew we were both busy but something felt off. It was as if something else was going on in his life. I told him about my concerns and insecurities and he assured me that there was nothing else and no one else in his life. I believed him and tried to work on my issues. But just a day after his assurances, a girl called me claiming to be Fiifi’s girlfriend. She called me because she believed he was cheating on her with me. Little did she know that I was there before her. This time around I chose to believe her.

What Would You Do If You Caught Me Cheating On You?–Beads Media

When I confronted Fiifi he asked me, “Are you going to throw away our four-year relationship just because of a lie a girl told you?” He was doing it again. The same thing he did the first time that I believed him. I didn’t want to blindly believe him yet again so I asked the girl for anything that can prove their relationship. She showed me messages and pictures that proved everything. But when I had a conference call with Fiifi and the girl, he denied ever knowing the girl and having anything to do with her. I told him “Fiifi, if you really love me as you say you do, then please tell me the truth.” That was when he came clean. He apologized for everything. He said the long-distance got to him. I felt he had made a mistake so I forgave him.

Fiifi is now in his third year in school but now a different girl has also called me again, claiming to be his girlfriend. She also said he is cheating on her with a new girl. The interesting thing is, this supposedly new girl she suspects Fiifi is cheating on her with,  happens to be the first girl I spoke to when we exchanged SIM cards. I know this because I asked him and he confirmed it. He is still asking me to forgive him. But it seems  I’ve been blind all this while. I know I should have believed he was cheating on me the first time the girl called, but I chose to believe him. That was my mistake. We are over, but now I’m afraid to love again. I always think about how much I loved and trusted him with my all, only for him to treat me this way.
