When my girlfriend got discharged from the hospital, I promised her a party. I said, “When you’re finally strong and could walk without complaining of pains, I would throw a huge party for you.” I said that only to motivate her but as time went on, I realized she had taken it seriously. She talked about the party almost every day and how she couldn’t wait to invite her friends to the party. At that point, I couldn’t tell her that I was joking. I had to put something together and do the party as promised.

But money was the issue. I tried but I wasn’t able to pull the required resources. So one day I told her, “The party I promised you is going to be something between you and me. It’s just something small to thank God for how far he has brought you. So Pick a place of your choice and let’s go there to celebrate. Trust women to choose something expensive whenever given the chance. She chose a four-star hotel close to the airport. I didn’t mind. After all, it was for only the two of us.

That day we picked Uber and went to the hotel. She went through the menu and selected whatever she wanted. I was interested in the drinks so I ordered a drink for a start. A few minutes later she had a call from one of her friends. I heard her telling her friend that she was at the hotel. I heard her saying, “Really? Then you can come around.” After the call, she told me, “Abena said she’s just around the corner with Alice so they want to pass by. I said. “Ok.”

These girls came with a bang and huge noise. After the laughter and pleasantries, I saw them flipping through the menu. I saw them signaling the waiter, giving him their orders. When their order arrived, my girlfriend looked at me and I smiled. They took over the conversation telling my girlfriend how they’ve missed her and all. After they had finished eating, they called the waiter again to ask for ice cream which was delivered in a beautiful glass that made it look like ice cream for the gods. Minutes later, they had finished eating the ice cream.

It was getting late so I asked the waiter to bring the bill. He did. I looked through and told him, “Could you please separate the bill? Ours is different from theirs.” Dead silence. My girlfriend looked at me with a dint of unbelief in her eyes.” When the waiter brought the bill, I handed theirs to them to pay while I paid for ours. I heard them talking to each other in whispers. They went to stand aside and later called my girlfriend to join them. When they came back they said, “Actually we don’t have that much on us so we were thinking you’ll pay so we bring you the money tomorrow?”

I said, “I’m sorry I don’t have that much too. I budgeted for the two of us. When you gals came, you didn’t ask us anything so I thought you were capable. I’m sorry.” My girlfriend added her voice, asking me to help.” I told her, “Dear, you know my situation and you know I would have done it if I had the means. I don’t.” One of them asked me, “So what are we going to do?” I said, “You two have to decide what you’re going to do.” I went outside and left them there. After some minutes, I saw them coming. They were casting angry looks my way but who cares.

My girlfriend said, “We can go now.” They left us without saying a word to me. In the car going home, my girlfriend told me how they were able to make the payment. “They both had to borrow money from MTN Qwikloan to pay.” I said, “Good to know. Next time they won’t assume that because there’s a man present, he automatically becomes the one who pays for what they eat.”

They got so angry they stayed away from my girlfriend. Actually, I’d always wanted them out of her life. The day my girlfriend got discharged, she called these two best friends to tell them that she had been discharged. They screamed for joy but that was all. I thought they would pass by to say hello but they didn’t. When she was admitted, they came to visit at the initial stages and didn’t come there again. I didn’t blame them. People are busy fighting their own battles. We came to the restaurant and suddenly they were there, thinking they could eat whatever they wanted. Not on my watch.

They went around telling people that on our wedding day they’ll see if we would send them an invite. Invite? for them to come and eat and take photos? Who actually cares?”
