I was on my way to meet a sneaky link one evening at Kaneshie when I met this fine man on a motorbike. I wouldn’t have seen him or even noticed him at all if he hadn’t stopped and asked to give me a ride. I would have politely declined the offer on any normal evening and continued my way. This particular evening was different though. I couldn’t put a finger on it but there was something about him that made me agree to hitch a ride with him.

I was engulfed by his smell the moment I sat on the bike. Lord, he smelled so good. I do like a man who smells nice. That’s why I couldn’t help but crush on this kind stranger when I sat behind him. Throughout the entire ride, I swooned over him.

He wasn’t heading to Kaneshie so I had to get down when we got to Kasoa. “Can we exchange contacts?” He asked after I got my thank yous out of the way. I told him I would prefer to take his number. He didn’t trust that I would call him if he gave it to me. Even after several assurances, he kept saying, “Make sure you call so I also get your number. If not, I will be waiting by my phone till I am old and grey.” “Who waits by their phone in this time and age?” I thought to myself as I giggled like a teenage girl at his joke.

I dialed his number there and then just to end his antics. I expected a call or a text from him within a day or two but there was none. I also didn’t contact him. It took a while before I finally got a text from him one evening. Things flowed seamlessly from there.

Our first date was fun. He made me laugh a lot. And the more I laughed the more my heart softened toward him. By the time I got home, my cheeks were filled with smiles. I lay in bed that night thinking about some of his silly jokes bit by bit.

As time went on we met often. Each moment we spent together left a piece of my heart in his hands. By the time I knew it, I had given all of it to him. Too late to run. I was head over heels in love with Robert.

Soon enough we started dating but here’s the catch. We are both parents. My baby daddy and I split up so I have been raising my child as a single mother. I explained this to him and he said it wasn’t a problem.

He also said he was no longer with the mother of his child. I believed him but I later saw that he had saved her number as “Wife To Be” with lots of heart emojis. Her photos were hanging everywhere in his room. There were baby stuff too; toys, walker, and clothing accessories.

This had me in doubt but he assured me she was truly his ex. While I was trying to find out the truth, he came to tell me, “My baby mama wants to move in with me. She says our child needs me.” I am sure if I had water in my mouth I would have spat it at him accidentally. When he saw the look of shock and confusion on my face he said, “Oh don’t worry. This doesn’t mean we are over. She may live with me but I want us to continue dating but we’ll have to keep it on the low.”

He proceeded to say that we could only meet at guest houses and no calls in the evening. “We can’t spend as much quality time together again. We can only meet when we need each other,” he said. I was so angry to hear this. He didn’t have to admit that he lied to get me to date him. All he had to do was move me to the role of a secret sin. That was all I needed to know that I had been dating another woman’s man all along.

I declined his proposal and asked him to focus on his family. Still, I can’t help feeling stupid. The signs were clear but I was too blinded by love and hope to acknowledge them. I chose to believe he was being honest with me when she said she was an ex. She was living there all along. She had just moved to her mum’s place to give birth.

I don’t really need advice. I just want a place to rant and this feels like the right place. But men, hmm, men will stain your white.
