After reading the first paragraph of his story, I said to myself, “This sounds like me and Danny’s story. After the second paragraph, I knew the story was indeed about me and Danny. Though he changed the locations in the story, two things gave him away. No three things. One was the way I introduced them the day I took him to meet my sister.

I remember when we were leaving, he expressed his displeasure about the way I did the introduction. He said I should have at least said something sweet about him, something to indicate that there was a chance for us to end up together. I told him, “As far as I didn’t lie to my sister, you should be good.”

The second thing that gave him away was the fact that I gave his number to Erica to call him when she needed something. That wasn’t the reason I gave his number to my sister. My sister isn’t the kind who’ll need anything from a stranger her sister brought. I was going to send her something and I knew I would send it through Danny so to make it easier, I decided to link them up. But when Danny asked about it, I told him I gave his number to my sister in case she needed something.

And the third is when he said my sister was thicker at the right places. I remember after the meeting, he asked me which of us was older. When I asked him why he was asking that question, he answered, “Because she’s thick and taller than you.” Erica looks like the older one among us because she’s thicker and taller.

I’d seen signs that something of that sort could be going on. He went out with Erica and Erica posted it on her status before calling to tell me she went out with Danny. She went on talking about all the good things she had noticed about him. I encouraged her that Danny was a good guy.

I didn’t lie when I said he was a good guy and I still think he is. He came into my life when I had a lot going on. I also didn’t tell him the truth so to some extent, it’s my fault. I had a boyfriend when Danny proposed. We had broken up but the thing about our relationship was it wasn’t stable. We can break up today and come back tomorrow.

His parents knew me and My parents also knew him and we’d dated for three years. It made it difficult for us to break up because anytime it happened, either his parents would call to beg or my parents would call to settle our issues. I wanted to leave and he also wanted to leave so we decided we would go our separate ways for a while and see what happens. That was when Danny showed up.

All the time I was telling him to give me time, I was waiting to see what happens between me and my boyfriend. Finally, we broke up. I could have called Danny and started a relationship with him but I decided to give myself timeout for healing. And then I realized Danny’s focus had changed. He wasn’t calling like he used to. He didn’t text like he used to. It was good for me because it gave me time to heal.

One day Erica called to ask about him. She said, “Do you think he’s a good guy or he’s just pretending?”

It was a sign something was developing. I called Danny and asked if there was something of that sort. He denied it and insisted I was the one he wanted. Another time, Erica came to ask me how long I’d known Danny. I asked if she wanted to date him. Erica is usually open to me and very honest about the things she says but that day she shook her head and said, “I’m only wondering about him due to the vibe he has been giving me.”

I gave up on them until I read this story. I sent the link to Danny and asked him, “You sent this story be honest with me.” He denied it until I pushed and pushed. He said, “Sorry about that. I didn’t mean anything I said in the story. It was just for fun.”

Of course, I didn’t believe him. “All I asked for was time so why would you shift your attention to no one other person but my sister?”

“I’m sorry about that but I didn’t know how long I should wait. I know it isn’t right that I would say something like this about your sister but you also kept me waiting for too long I had no option but to look elsewhere,” he answered.

“You’re free to have her. She loves you too.”

I called Erica. This time I was honest with her. I told her everything about me and Danny. She said, “Wow, you nearly messed me up. Why didn’t you tell me the truth? That isn’t fair.”

It wasn’t fair, I agreed. I apologized to her and asked her to follow her heart. I stopped breathing while waiting for her answer, whether she was going to go ahead with her plan or abort now that she knew the truth. She exhaled. She said, “Alright. You two should solve your problems and leave me out of it.”

There was no problem to resolve. There was only a confusing web I caused to spiral because of my own indecisiveness. Danny has been apologizing for writing the story but to me, that isn’t the problem. The problem I have now is how I’m going to deal with my sister going forward. How to win her over again looking at how far I sent her on a chase of fool’s gold.

Surprisingly, Danny thinks something can work between us now that we’ve been able to open up to each other. He didn’t want me to share my version of the story and when he finally said I should go ahead, he told me what I could and couldn’t say but here I am telling the whole truth. I don’t know what will happen in the future but I know this; it ends here. This charade and drama that comes with it.
